A thief in Darlington mugged an elderly, recently widowed woman in the street and snatched £4,000 from her purse (wallet), then threw away her bag. He managed to miss that the bag contained another £20,000 (about $27,500).
Later, the bag was discovered by another thief who stole two bracelets from it, but also missed the £20,000. He pawned the bracelets, police traced them, and finally retrieved the bag with the wad of cash still inside.
The victim said the money was her life savings to pay for her grandchildren's education, but I cannot work out why she was carrying the whole lot around in her bag.
