"This is the tipping point"/Catholic Church scandal widens

  • #21
NEW DELHI - A Catholic priest charged with sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl in Minnesota is working in his home diocese in India and has no plans to return to the U.S. to face the courts, he and his bishop told The Associated Press on Monday.

Church documents obtained by the AP show the Vatican was alerted to the accusations against the Rev. Joseph Palanivel Jeyapaul more than three years ago but did not respond.

The priest has received only a minor punishment and is currently working in his bishop's office processing teacher appointments for a dozen church schools in the diocese of Ootacamund in southern India.

I am a converted Catholic..............so my mom could marry my step dad back in the day..............
We were devote Catholics.
Mom came from a Presbyterian back ground..........so I say I was raised both.
Her mom did not believe in organized churches.
She always said about the hypocrites, moran preachers, sex abuse in the Catholic church. Nuns/priests having babies in Catholic orphanges never to be adopted out etc.........
Her sister had gotten into some southern cult in KY and had to be kidnapped out of it in the 1950's.
She read her Bible daily, prayed for forgiveness and told me I could pray and love Jesus any where at anytime. I do.
It breaks my heart, in my faith I am strong.
In my house of worship, I feel betrayed by the very people who are suppose to
be our leaders and support.
It's all so wrong.
I must step out of endorsing my own church, but I will always love the LORD!!

Passionflower--I've always been involved in church. I was raised American Baptist (more liberal than the Southern Baptists) and have attended the Church of Christ, Methodist and Presbyterian churches. It was with great sadness that church did not work for our very large special needs family. Our children had so many strange and challenging behaviors and there were so many safety issues, we just couldn't swing it.

I came up with my own church--at home--for the kids. We sang, we read Bible stories and along the way we came to value and embrace many other faiths. We learned about Judaism through a dynamic rabbi in our town and his storyteller wife. We learned about Catholicism from a dear friend who was an attorney for several of our children who returned to theology school after retirement. We learned about Buddhism when my husband and 6 of our kids went to Biloxi after Katrina and helped rebuild a Buddhist Temple.

I've never been so proud in my life than when my husband was invited back for the re-dedication of the Temple. It had been totally destroyed by Katrina on the very day it was originally dedicated. The nuns and monks who had traveled from all over the country for the festivities actually had to crawl into the attic and pray and chant while the water lapped at their feet. It was a miracle they survived. On the night of the rededication, my husband was present. It was a joyous occasion and he allowed me to take part by leaving his cell phone turned on so I could hear the chanting and the bells, 2500 miles away.

Once I became bedbound, my days of church attendance and church work were over. I have found that my faith has grown ten fold!! Jesus is a constant in my life and since I am always alone, I can speak to him aloud if I wish. I've also found that I continue to embrace many tenets of many faiths and I treasure all of them. I've learned to pray the rosary and have special prayer beads sent to me by the Monk in Biloxi. When our precious granddaughter died, a dear Episcopal pastor learned of our grief and he came to pray with us. Just knocked on our door bringing cookies!! In fact, we asked him to pray with us. He was not proselytizing at all, just reaching out to us. We've never forgotten his kindness.

Any organization--a school, business, church, camp, scout troop, sports club--can be rife with evil. One must be so careful to not be harmed by human beings that have no connection whatsoever with the original mission of the group. For me, my bedroom with the view of the mountains and my bed covered with dogs is all the church I need.

Why do I get the strong sense that this deputy has been chosen to be the sacrificial lamb? Did he draw the short straw?

Vatican deputy led cover-up in US abuse case: report

"The current Vatican number two, and not Pope Benedict XVI, bore the main responsibility for inaction in the scandal of a US priest accused of molesting deaf children, a German magazine said Monday.

Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone -- who was the deputy chief of the Church's moral watchdog when it was headed by the current pope -- played the role of a "brake" in the affair, the Die Zeit weekly said...."

Missizzy - I don't think anyone is going to buy this for one minute. They are really grasping at straws trying to cover for the pope here. There are too many documents that prove he was involved or at times refused to respond at all.

I am a recent convert to the Catholic faith, from a largely Baptist upbringing. I am deeply sorrowed by the evil actions that certain individual priests and Bishops have committed by abusing their positions of respect and authority in the Church. Bishops who have enabled this behavior are no better. But this has not destroyed my faith in Christ or His church. Why? Because I have been grounded in enough history to know that scandals are not new in the Church and that this behavior is not isolated to the Catholic Church. Identical accusations can be (and should be) made against any institution which harbors criminal behavior, whether public or religious institutions. By exposing these felonies, and holding authorities accountable, we make clear that positions of authority do not grant privilege to protect the guilty.

But back to my point. Looking at the history of the Church, it is apparent to me that evil has been trying to destroy it from the inside since the very beginning. We have just entered the Easter season, marking the resurrection of our Lord. He himself was betrayed to his death by one of his closest friends, whom he had hand-chosen. He was abandoned by all of his closest friends, except for the youngest, John, and his mother and a few other women. Follow the history of the Church through the Bible (sometimes reading between the lines in books like the epistles of John exhorting the faithful to be careful whom to trust and watch out for the false prophets), and through the centuries. Scandals come and go, but the Church and the Faith persists.

The word of the Faith is a beautiful and spirit-filling thing. It is not the Faith itself that has committed these atrocities. It is the people who have failed to live up to the standards the faith demands. Not because of the Faith, in spite of it. This is SUCH a scandal, because it is clear each and every individual involved should have known better. They teach better. It is this hypocrisy that the media finds so sensationalistic.

In the last decades, great changes have been made from the top down in order to prevent these crimes in the future. That does not exonerate the guilty, but is a step in the search for forgiveness for the Church itself, as it comes to terms with these facts and repents. Intense screening measures have been implemented throughout the priestly formation process. Every person connected with the Church in any manner, volunteer or hire, is required to go through training for child-safety. Children are educated in self-reporting. It is clear that this behavior is not and will never be tolerated. Many of these reforms have been due to the work of the current Pope himself, beginning long before his papacy. I believe this is being taken extremely seriously and appropriate measures are being implemented to protect the flock for the present and the future.

FYI - My emails to the Vatican have been returned as undeliverable. Apparently the mailbox has been "temporarily disabled". How convenient that they don't feel the need to hear what people have to say. Not at all surprising, but another disgusting behavior exhibited by the catholic church.

Great posts, you guys. I find it very hard to believe that the Pope will go down, but if you think about this in ANY other situation a person in this position would be investigated and likely charged in a criminal prosecution. How and if the Catholic Church can weather this storm remains to be seen, but I agree that this could be the tipping point for them.

This sort of crap, sorry if that offends anyone, but this group the Catholic League is washing right over this...hysteria, delinquents...It makes my blood boil.

For US abuse victims, crisis reawakens past trauma

"The clergy sex abuse stories surfacing around Europe stir a sickness in KM's stomach and lure back the sweat-covered nightmares of her own abuse.

Beginning at age 13, she said, she was molested by a priest in a small town parish in North Andover, north of Boston. It happened 30 years ago, but she said the news out of Europe made it seem like today.

"It's horrible," KM said. "It's reopening everything."

Still, KM hopes the revelations keep coming, to expose the abusers and help other victims find a voice...."

and

"The same mixed reaction was reported by other alleged clergy sex abuse victims in the U.S., which is a few years removed from the height of a nationwide scandal that had the similar revelations and accusations about serially abusive priests who were protected by church leaders....."

This is not looking good for the Pope:

AP EXCLUSIVE: Future pope stalled pedophile case

"The future Pope Benedict XVI resisted pleas to defrock a California priest with a record of sexually molesting children, citing concerns including "the good of the universal church," according to a 1985 letter bearing his signature.

The correspondence, obtained by The Associated Press, is the strongest challenge yet to the Vatican's insistence that Benedict played no role in blocking the removal of pedophile priests during his years as head of the Catholic Church's doctrinal watchdog office.

The letter, signed by then-Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, was typed in Latin and is part of years of correspondence between the Diocese of Oakland and the Vatican about the proposed defrocking of the Rev. Stephen Kiesle...."

Catholic League: Hysteria over Irish Clergy Abuse

Excellent report, Lola. The church and its cohorts have no trouble in demeaning the victims, in their efforts to protect their image. I have noticed that in all of the documents released concerning the priests and the Vatican, not a single one even mentions the victims. Not a single one shows the slightest concern for the victims. They just don't bother to mention them. Yet, several of them specifically state that the abusing priests should be treated with paternal compassion and care. It makes me sick to my stomach to even think about.

A new update and a question. First, just released:

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100411...5bl9oZWFkbGluZV9saXN0BHNsawNhYnVzZWNoYXJnZWE-

Abuse charge against Catholic priest roils Kenya

NAIROBI, Kenya – After three young men and a boy told police last June an Italian priest had been sexually molesting them for years at a shelter for poor children, the most senior Roman Catholic cleric in Kenya announced the church would investigate thoroughly.

Ten months later, nothing has been investigated by the church, its lawyer says, and the Vatican has not been notified.

The accused priest, the Rev. Renato Kizito Sesana, continues to run the facility along with other shelters on the outskirts of Nairobi.

Kenyan police say they found no evidence and believe Sesana is innocent. Sesana himself has denied the allegations, saying some of his accusers may have been bribed or coerced as part of a plan to seize church assets worth up to $5.3 million.

It is unclear whether the abuse took place or not, but the church's response — or lack of it — has inspired furious debate in Kenya....."

Now, to my question. I am not Catholic but my husband was raised in a Catholic home. His father was/is an abuser. Rapes of his daughters are now documented. He's been put on notice by his local Sheriff's office that he is not to live with unmarried young women with children (to help them) as LE are aware of the daughters' disclosures which fell outside the SOL.

This man was a member of the Knights of Columbus for almost 50 years--he's now in his late 70s. He constantly regaled people about the good he did with this group, helping the poor. It was shocking to me to learn that he used this group to access many of his victims, the very young girls of poor single Moms.

I've heard, through the grapevine, that he has been barred from his local Knights of Columbus which I feel is great. However, my question is whether anyone involved with the church or watching this debacle has ever heard of allegations against this group. I would be very interesting to hear about it. My husband has very vivid memories of his dad and other men "going visiting" for the Knights and we now wonder what these visits were all about. Is it a well known fact that the Knights attracted abusers or has this group come through unscathed and still honorable?

Another update and some very interesting comments about the Knights of Columbus:

http://ncronline.org/news/accountability/more-documents-link-ratzinger-abuse-cases

More documents link Ratzinger to abuse cases

"....The U.S.-based Catholic fraternal order, the Knights of Columbus, is encouraging members worldwide to join in a special novena for Pope Benedict. The novena is to begin on Divine Mercy Sunday, April 11, and conclude Monday, April 19, the fifth anniversary of Benedict's election as pope in 2005.

A notice from the Knights of Columbus says, "We pray for the pope and for his pastoral mission, asking God to protect, strengthen and uplift our beloved Holy Father at this time of considerable challenge."

more at link with comments following, including this one:

"Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Apr. 10, 2010.
The Knights of Columbus are making a Novena for the Pope! This doesn't surprise me knowing how the Knights think.

Why don't they make a Novena for the abuse victims. living and dead, and their families?"

An interesting comment. Can anyone shed some light on the comment, "knowing how the Knights think"?

Warning: Photo of known pedophile priest with children included. Could be a trigger for some.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/lt_preda...DeW5faGVhZGxpbmVfbGlzdARzbGsDaW52ZXN0aWdhdGlv

AP IMPACT: Predator priests shuffled around globe

"There he was, five decades later, the priest who had raped Joe Callander in Massachusetts. The photo in the Roman Catholic newsletter showed him with a smile across his wrinkled face, near-naked Amazon Indian children in his arms and at his feet.

The Rev. Mario Pezzotti was working with children and supervising other priests in Brazil.

It's not an isolated example...."

and

"Reached by telephone, Pezzotti said only: "I don't see why I have to talk about it. Everything was resolved and I don't feel like talking...."

Mercyneal--I'm not Catholic but I've sure watched this closely and I have to agree. There's just no way to save the ship at this point if he doesn't.

I don't have triggers, per se, but that photo of Rev. Pezzotti made me crawl out of my skin.

Hello WS

Like I saw on Saturday Night Live, this week: it was "the devil"(one of the actors in a costume) and even the devil was appalled. It's not funny, really but it makes a point. The sketch went on to say: the church needs to stop protecting the molesters and protect the children.

It is sad that even has to be suggested. :furious: This has got to stop happening to children. Shame, shame on the church. (No offense to anyone religious, that is different than what is happening to children under the guise of religion).

I will pray that all those in the church involved in the abuse of children( or anyone)will be swiftly brought to justice. Amen.
