I’m beginning to think the murder started weeks before. I think was a publicity stunt that went deadly. It is possible that it was to be a “Kidnapping” and JonBenét found unhurt or she would have escaped. Remember the supplies bought at the hardware store , the trial 911 call, lawyers for the whole family, the Stein family connection. Maybe that’s the “kidnapper” ? Maybe the “kidnapping went bad and JonBenét was dropped down the stairs. Remember the garland ? Now they had a dying girl and had to hide it. Can you imagine the popularity and media frenzy that would have come from Little Miss Colorado escaping a Kidnapping on Christmas? This was a made for TV PR stunt to end all stunts that went bad.

I’d love to hear you additions to this scenario.

I'm not sure how serious you are? I think a Media/Tabloids Did It theory could be slightly fun.

But regardless, I think there is at least an outside chance that this could have been a Hero Homicide, as I think you are proposing. Hero Homicide refers to the murder of a victim who is unintentionally killed as a result of having been intentionally placed in the face of grave danger. The perp places the victim in said danger so that he/she can play the hero and get credited with saving them.

But to me, it's all John in this scenario. It was intended as, at least in part, an elaborate yet ultimately passive aggressive means of manipulating and controlling Patsy. He stages the crime for it to be unstaged. He writes the RN to create the image of a monster, and then makes sure that all of Patsy's closest friends witness him as the opposite of said monster. He is recognized as the hero - locally and nationally - and then he gets to go vigilante on the "kidnappers" Mel Gibson style.

I mean, it's crazy how similar Mel Gibson's character in Ransom is to John. (superficially, of course - that movie doesn't really contain any character development)
