Most people are familiar with the impossible elegant, impeccably turned-out face of ladies of the 1930s and 40s, as portrayed by professional photographers. Looking as though they had nothing much more to do than wait for a gentleman to open a door for them.

68-year-old investment banker Peter J Cohen knows different though, since he started collecing private family snaps from flea markets, 25 years ago.

Now he's published a book, 'Snapshots of Dangerous Women', showing what they were really getting up to. I love all the examples at the link, except for that dead alligator one.

and high heels? I think this photo is a hoax - she's actually laying down & the photographer perched above her IMO
