Threat detected?

Ok, I restarted my computer, Avast updated it's virus definitions, and I can now get here with no problem (the annoying "threat has been detected" announcement kept making my cat jump). Whew. That was weird.

Although...I came here specifically to check back into the political pavilion, after giving myself a self-imposed time-out for a bit, since I was getting all worked up--since I'm still feeling worked up, I'm going to take this as a sign from the computer gods to keep just poking around other forums for now, lol!

BBM Cat? I jumped so high I injured my knee on my desk. LOL Mine fixed after I manually updated the virus definitions.

Glad I found this thread. I wish I was able to see it yesterday but, ws was a threat. I'll have to update avast when I get home.

I have about 20 years of computer experience, and am pretty familiar with Anti-Virus software. The one thing that you DON'T want to do if something like this happens is turn off your AV program, because you will be putting your system at serious risk if it is a real threat, and most of the time, they are. Avast's false-positives are very rare.

1.) Instead, contact your Anti-Virus company through e-mail or by submitting the link to the Virus Lab that you found at your Anti-Virus company's website. (Use hxxp: instead of http for the format of the suspected link so the link is not accidental clicked on in the e-mail.) The describe the problem to your Anti-Virus company in the e-mail message.

2.) If you get a bad file in a download, create a zip folder and place the folder temporarily on your desktop.

2. a.) Move the suspected file to the zipped folder. (Don't doube click the file!)
b.) Password protect the zipped folder by double clicking on the zipped folder (not the file in the folder!)
c.) On the File Menu, click "Add a Password"
d.) In the password box, type a password
e. In the Confirm Password box, type the password again.

3.) Attach the file in to your e-mail message. In the subject line, write "Please investigate this potential virus file."

4.) Describe the issue you had in the body of the e-mail message. Put the password in the body of the e-mail message.

5.) Submit to your anti-virus company for testing. If it's a false-positive, a definition should be out within 12-24 hours for the next update. If it is a virus, because it is getting blocked after 1-2 AV updates from the time you sent the file or URL, you know a real infection has been blocked.

6.) After submission of the file, delete the zipped folder from wherever you put it and empty your Recycle Bin.

6.) If you have, or can get to the e-mail of the site without going to the site during the time the threat is being investigated, make sure to report that your AV picked up a virus, so that the webmaster can investigate.

But NEVER EVER turn off your Anti-Virus if a threat has been detected! That's the worst thing you can do! The proper thing to do is to scan the site with virus total, www.virustotal.com, which provides scans for about 40 different anti-virus scanners. Wait until virustotal.com shows that the site is clean, than you can visit it again.

Thanks for the tips, Satch!

Normally I wouldn't turn it off if a threat was detected but knowing this site and the threats it said were detected (2 different threats were alerted from here) I somehow felt it was something stupid, which it was, and decided to risk it. I'm a risk taker like that, lol :)
I was thinking maybe it was certain ads being detected as threats or something.

I'll throw in a plug here for the most respectful and thoughtful on-line political discussion group I've seen. I'm just so personally worked up about what's going on in Wisconsin right now that I have to give myself the occasional self-imposed time-out, mostly just for my own sanity. It took WI politics to get me to venture in there, and I've been very impressed (and have taken away some things to really think about, on a variety of issues). I think it's a combination of some very careful, thoughtful posters, and some very good mods, that make it a very nice space for horizon-expanding discussion.

Totally off-topic to this particular thread, but there it is. Go check out the political pavilion, y'all. You won't be disappointed.

Never had this issue before. Starting this afternoon Avast started blocking WS. Doesn't block any other site I've tried, just this one. Had to turn off my anti-virus just to get in the forums. Has anyone had this problem recently? Took a screen shot for reference, hopefully I attached it right.

Yes, this happened to me yesterday and Avast totally shut down and aborted my attempt to open WS. I was wondering what the heck happened. Said it was Malware attempting to invade my computer.

Norton 360 & Microsoft Essentials here no problem's directly connected to Websleuths what so ever..

There is a Adobe sometype of a Pop-Up update ad going around with 3 embeded trojan's or virus in it... Watch out for this one..

I highly recomend everybody with Microsoft system to download and use

IT'S FREE !!!!!!!!!!! Don't cost 1 penny..

Microsoft Essentials safety & Anti-Virus program... There different level's you can join I join Advance Level myself.. It's your personal pick level you want... It's up to you stage you want...

But that program saved my behind more than a few times... A download that is bad program in it, It will light up big warnings right on your computer very fast...
