Tiger kills man at San Francisco Zoo

My dearest Philamena,:blowkiss:
Nice to see you.

The link on my last post states this;
Although no new visitors were let in after 5 p.m. Tuesday, the grounds had not been not scheduled to close until an hour later, and 20 to 25 people were still in the zoo when the attacks happened, zoo officials said.

They were already in the zoo so they could still be there until it closed at 6. It was stated earlier today that the 3 were together. The same link states that a witness says that the tiger was provoked and it was out of its cage prior to the attack.

This is the first mention of this - it seems very strange that the tiger could have been out, for any time at all, without the entire zoo going on high alert almost immediately.

That link is from Faux News; I don't trust them; they have been known to make things up all too often.

Don't they just mean out of her cage into the 'free' area where they usually are? The one seperated from the people by the moat and wall I mean.
I doubt the tiger was out of her cage walking around in the zoo for 15-20 minutes.

From dark_Shadow's article: One witness said at least one of the victims had provoked the tiger, which had been out of its cage an estimated 15 to 20 minutes, police said.
Beware of FAUX NEWS.

Thanks, shadows:). Yes, the link now works. It seems at least one witness may have stated that one of the victims may have provoked Tatiana the tiger. I hope that officials learn if that is a fact or not, and I hope a powerful lesson is learned if it is true.

I have been raising German Shepherds for years and no one has ever been bitten or attacked by any of my dogs. But, one time, years ago, an 18 year old clerk at PetsMart decided to "stalk" my dog (my dog was on a leash as always). This was a rock solid dog who was highly trained and very well socialized. In fact it is the dog, Shep, in my siggy. I didn't see the young man because he was behind me. My dog barked at him, I turned around, saw what the kid was doing, and quickly had my dog "quit" and sit under full control.

I asked the kid what on earth he thought he was doing. He said he just wanted to see what a dog like that would really do if threatened! Geesh, he could have been bitten had I not had a highly trained dog and years of experience handling dogs. One should not taunt any animal for any reason. Someone can get hurt or killed, and it just wrong to taunt, provoke, or tease any animal or human.

I don't know if the report or the witness was accurate just yet, so until I hear more facts I cannot say that this is what happened--once the tiger escaped from her enclosure. I am interested in finding out though what went wrong from start to finish.

Linask,
:) I just edited my post after reading dark_Shadow's link.
Of course I'm gussing here....but do you think the tiger was left out accidently?
Maybe seeing her out of the caged area caused the boys to aggrate her.
I hate to sound mean but if they saw her running about and taunted her, they got what they deserved.

I don't know what to think at this point. If someone let her out intentionally, that is sick... I asked my husband if that is a new gang member tactic. I read that the boy who was killed- his parents were getting divorced, maybe that prompted something in him to taunt his fate?
Or maybe it was negligence on the part of a zookeeper. I do believe the tiger could've jumped that moat, I've been there and seen it and I felt uneasy there, not safe. It's a very old zoo, but much better than the Oakland Zoo. I grew up with really good zoos- the San Diego Zoo, and the L.A. Zoo in it's day. (Can't speak for the L.A. Zoo anymore, I was there last year, and it was really run down!)

THANKS so much sweet one. :blowkiss:
Nice to see you too.

I didn't read the article carefully enough.:o
I didn't realize the zoo stayed opened until 6pm.

Linask,
That is exactly what my husband and I discussed after watching one of the news reports. Maybe this was some type of gang initiation or a dare gone terribly wrong.

I doubt the tiger was out of her cage walking around in the zoo for 15-20 minutes.

I've also read that because it was Christmas day, maybe some employees left early, it also would've been dark after 5:00, and the zoo was only open for one more hour, so maybe the zookeepers were also negligent.

The boys were stupid if they assisted the tiger out- it's been hypothesized that a board was placed into the moat to help her out, and taunted her.
They were friends who knew each other.

My daughter was scheduled to go on a trip there with her Brownie Troop in May, and they were also considered staying overnight at the Oakland Zoo. Now I'm not sure I want her doing either trip...

The zoo closes at 5:00PM and it wasn't dark yet.

Sunrise: 7:22am
Sunset: 4:55pm

That the three young men knew each other, were together, and the three were attacked--yet no one else was targeted leads me to believe that Tatiana targeted all three for some reason. And, we must keep in mind that a tiger does not generally attack three prey targets back to back. So this adds more to the possibility that the tiger targeted those three young men. We just don't have enough facts yet to know why this may have happened.

Thank-you for post. It was said by The Associated Press that the zoo stayed open an hour after closing and no new visitors were allowed in.

IIRC, the zoo stops letting people in at 5PM and all people in the zoo leave by 6PM. Does anyone else recall this? In any case I think, too, that it was still light when at least the first attack took place. I don't know about the 2nd and3rd attacks, though.

Yes, that is policy. No new visitors were let in, but the ones already there are allowed to stay until 6:00.

It was still light.

Jack Hanna merely speculated that perhaps someone placed a board in the mote. But, we don't know what happened. I think many around the nation have become interested in this tragic story and want to know the facts and what happened from start to finish. I was shocked and surprised when I first read about it here, and I there are just so many unanswered questions. With the investigation I imagine most if not all of the facts will come to light--at least I hope so.
