Three charged with murder of Tazewell man Aaron Massengill | wbir.com

Courtney LeAnn Gilpin, Patrick Andrew Smith, and Jimmy Lee Riffe have been arrested.

Claiborne County authorities identified (viewed Feb 22) surveillance video of Massengill's truck taken at a Pilot store in Middlesboro, Ky. The video also showed a male and female.

The timestamp on the video was about 11:30 p.m. Feb. 16 -- the same night Massengill last was seen.

Feb. 22, Massengill's body was found along a road in Tazewell. The TBI revealed Monday that he'd been shot to death.

On Feb. 25, the TBI tweeted out security photos of a woman taken at a convenience center.
That night Gilpin's mother contacted Claiborne County authorities to say the woman shown in the photos was her daughter. She said she'd been trying to reach Gilpin, who she said was pregnant.

From there, investigators tracked the suspects to Kingsport, where they were arrested Feb. 26.

The TBI said authorities recovered Massengill's Nissan at a home in Sullivan County, where they found the three suspects.

Court records suggest the three engaged in a plot to lure Massengill out to they could take his pickup.

Three arrested in Massengill murder - Claiborne Progress

On Feb. 22, at the request of 8th District Attorney General Jared Effler, TBI Agents began working alongside detectives with the Claiborne County Sheriff’s Office and the Tazewell Police Department in investigating the death of Aaron Jeremiah Massengill (DOB 3/30/92), after his body was discovered along Ferguson Ridge Road in Tazewell. An autopsy revealed that Massengill died as a result of a gunshot wound.

During the course of the investigation, authorities developed Patrick Andrew Smith (DOB 8/21/94), Courtney L. Gilpin (DOB 9/11/97), and Jimmy Lee Riffe (DOB 4/26/84) as suspects in the case. Further investigation revealed that the suspects were at a residence in Sullivan County.

On Friday, with the assistance of the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office, all three were taken into custody. The victim’s vehicle was also recovered at the residence.

Today, warrants were obtained for Smith, Gilpin, and Riffe, charging all three with one count of First Degree Murder, one count of Aggravated Robbery, and one count of Conspiracy to Commit Robbery. Riffe and Gilpin are being held in the Claiborne County Jail. Smith is currently being held in the Sullivan County Jail, awaiting transport back to Claiborne County.

All three defendants charged in the murder of Tazewell man Aaron Massengill appeared before a Claiborne County judge on Tuesday morning.

At the prosecution’s request, Courtney LeAnn Gilpin, Patrick Andrew Smith and Jimmy Lee Riffe will be held in jail in lieu of a $1 million bond.

The defense for all three said they will argue to reduce the bond amount later.

The judge said he would leave it up to the lawyers to set future court dates including a preliminary hearing date and ordered the defendants not to contact Massengill’s family.

Gilpin, Smith and Riffe are charged with first-degree murder, aggravated robbery and other charges in the Feb. 16 killing of Massengill.

Authorities allege the three conspired to steal Massengill’s pickup truck.

Records show Gilpin has prior drug paraphernalia and driving-related charges.

Family of Aaron Massengill speaks after suspects are arrested for his murder | WATE 6 On Your Side

Massengill has been laid to rest. His family is now ready to share how they want him to be remembered. Sharon Massengill, Aaron’s mother says he was always respectful.

“That child never ever talked back to me his entire life,” Massengill said. “He was a really good kid. And I understand with his age he wasn’t considered a kid but he’ll always be my child.”

Aaron’s sister, Ashley Bolden says he was known around his community for being helpful. Even to strangers. In the end, Aaron’s community gave back what he gave to them.

Hundreds of people came together to help search for Aaron. Many donated money to go toward a reward for his safe return. During the darkest time of their lives, this family chooses to focus on the light.

Exactly! Why plan to steal an old pickup? Then kill the guy and keep the truck?
