Missing persons case leads Memphis PD to Tallahatchie County

MISSING PERSON CASE LEADS MEMPHIS PD TO TALLAHATCHIE COUNTY
By Clay McFerrin, Fri. 2/11/22

Two investigators and a crime scene technician from the Memphis Police Department were in Tallahatchie County recently, seeking leads into the case of a woman missing since Thanksgiving.

In a bulletin, MPD said Ashley McDonald, 27, was last seen Nov. 25, 2021, at her apartment on Knight Trail Circle in southeast Memphis. Police said it was believed she was headed to Batesville, Mississippi, to meet an unknown male.

A 2013 black Ford Fusion that McDonald is thought to have been driving was discovered abandoned Dec. 15 near Pamplin Road in the Tippo community of Tallahatchie County -- about 55 miles southwest of Batesville -- explained Tallahatchie County Sheriff Jimmy Fly. The location and placement of the car suggest that it was not meant to be easily found, Fly said. He did not say who discovered the automobile, nor did he reveal anything about its condition.

When the Ford's vehicle identification number did not raise any flags in a law enforcement database, Fly said the auto was towed to a local salvage yard where it had remained since.

The sheriff said only recently did the Memphis police learn of the car's whereabouts through a report from the vehicle's finance company and contact Tallahatchie County officials.

On Jan. 25 the three MPD officers visited Tallahatchie County and were shown the location where the vehicle was found. Fly said that area and the car itself were processed for potential evidence.

The sheriff and his office and agents from the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation used cadaver dogs to search in the Tippo area on Jan. 26. The dogs did not alert to any hits, he noted.

McDonald, who Fly said has no known ties to Tallahatchie County, is described as a Black female with black hair and brown eyes, standing 5.05 feet tall and weighing 150 pounds, with curly shoulder-length hair. Memphis police said it is unknown what clothing she was wearing at the time she went missing.

Anyone who has any information about the case may contact the Tallahatchie County Sheriff's Office at 662-647-5511 or 662-647-3700, or the Memphis Police Department's Missing Persons Bureau at 901-636-4479.

So it would seem she at least made it to the Batesville area. How do they know she was meeting up with a man? Did they meet on SM? Dating site? Friend of a friend? The outcome won't be good. She's been missing for too long and the fact that her car was found abandoned? Yikes. I'm hoping for the best for this pretty young lady.

Here's another article. I hope that there is forensic evidence in the car that will lead LE to the "unknown male."

Missing Memphis woman's car found in Mississippi

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A vehicle belonging to a missing Memphis woman has been found.

Ashley McDonald was first reported missing in November. She was reportedly going to Batesville, Mississippi on Thanksgiving to meet a man.

Now, McDonald’s vehicle has been found in Tallahatchie County, Mississippi — nearly 100 miles away from her southeast Memphis home.

Deputies found the Ford Fusion belonging to McDonald between a shed and a trailer. The vehicle was discovered on Dec. 15 off Pamplin Road, southwest of Charleston, Mississippi. That’s 20 days after McDonald was reportedly going to meet an “unknown male” in Batesville.

Neighbors think that whoever put the car there, didn’t want it to be found.

Tallahatchie County Sheriff Jimmy Fly confirmed the vehicle belonging to the 27-year-old had indeed been found. He did not go into detail about how it was located or any evidence that would lead investigators to McDonald.

Unknown to Memphis Police, the car had been sitting at a local salvage yard since Dec. 15 because it wasn’t listed on a stolen vehicle database. The Sheriff said MPD learned the vehicle was in Tallahatchie County after receiving a report from the vehicle’s finance company.

In late January, investigators from MPD along with a crime scene Technician checked the wooded area and the vehicle for evidence.

Agents from the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation are involved and that cadaver dogs searched the area where the car was found.

Neighbors in Tallahatchie said there was a clearly unusual and heavy law enforcement presence on this normally quiet part of the county.

Sheriff Fly said he hasn’t spoken with Ashley McDonald’s family.

WREG has reached out to the Memphis Police Department and the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation for comments but have yet to hear back from them.

Anyone with any information should contact the Tallahatchie County Sheriff’s Office at (662) 647-3700 or the MPD’s Missing Persons Bureau at (901) 636-4479.

Indeed, who is this person she was supposedly meeting in Batesville? AFAIK that information hasn't been released yet, but Ashley's family or friends must have at least some idea who this person is. Are there any phone/text records, emails, FB posts, etc. between Ashley and this person? Was it someone she was meeting for the first time, or perhaps a current or ex-BF?

This sounds like trouble. Obviously someone went to considerable effort to hide this vehicle. The question is, who left it here?

Pamplin Rd is about 8-10 miles southwest of Charleston, MS, and Charleston is about 25 miles south of Batesville, MS, and Batesville is about 50-60 miles from Memphis, TN.

The words bolded above mention a shed and trailer. As in an occupied house trailer? I'm thinking not, since it would be obvious to anyone living there that a car was parked there. Logic suggests this was likely some other kind of trailer, like a semi cargo trailer or something similar. The MSM mentions 'neighbors' so someone must have lived fairly close to where the car was parked, but the Pamplin Road area in general is quite rural and sparsely populated based on Google maps.

The recently identified remains of a missing Memphis woman found last month in southeastern Tallahatchie County were retrieved from a burned house in a very remote rural area, officials have confirmed.

Sheriff Jimmy Fly said Wednesday that the remains of 27-year-old Ashley McDonald, who went missing four months ago on Thanksgiving Day, were found Feb. 11 amongst the charred rubble of an abandoned residential structure.

More on the circumstances of her finding, for me this all looks very suspicious

i hope they are getting warrants for her social media records. MOO speculation: she met w this man for some reason, maybe romantic or maybe "business". he ambushed her whether for SA or robbery and killed her. then he either took her to the remote house or it occurred there. he burned the house and car and the car was prob stolen. left in her car and hid it. the killer prob is from this area to know where these remote places are and the way he hid her car.

The sheriff said only recently did the Memphis police learn of the car's whereabouts through a report from the vehicle's finance company and contact Tallahatchie County officials.

One tidbit - I have read about the finance companies having trackers, like this in this article:

"GPS tracking is by far the best investment a buy here pay here dealership or anyone doing subprime auto financing can make. With our reliable technology and high-speed networking, lenders can protect their portfolios by knowing the exact location of each and every vehicle they have financed.

Not only that, but our starter disable feature allows vehicles to be turned off in the event of non-payment. Simply click a button to send the starter disable command, and the next time a customer tries to start their car, they will be unable to. This kick-starts the collection process and prompts them to call in and make a full or partial payment. This method of enforcing payments can be extremely effective in helping customers stick to their payment schedules.

Teaching customers to pay on time reduces the need for repossessions and helps lenders save money on the costs associated, while allowing them to get paid on time. And in the event of a repossession, lenders are able to see exactly where a vehicle its, making recovery much less time consuming".

JMO it seems her car had this onboard. I wonder if the finance company disabled the car as in the article, rendering it undriveable to the perp - no simple switching of license plates, etc. It would be great if the finance company has records of exactly where/when the car was the entire time.
