Massive blast at military explosives plant in Tennessee leaves multiple people dead, several ‘unaccounted for’

Multiple people are dead or unaccounted for after a military explosives facility in Tennessee blew up Friday morning, rattling nearby homes and setting off smaller explosions, local officials say.

The explosion, which happened around 7:45 am local time, was a “devastating blast” but responders were able to secure the scene by late morning, Humphreys County Sheriff Chris Davis said at a news conference on Friday.

This is obviously a developing story.

Up to nineteen people feared dead after enormous explosion at Tennessee bomb factory

Multiple people are dead after a massive explosion erupted at a Tennessee bomb factory early Friday morning.

The blast went off at the Accurate Energetic Systems plant, located about 60 miles southwest of Nashville near the town of Bucksnort, around 7.50am local time.

Authorities confirmed there have been 'multiple' fatalities and several people are hospitalized, WSMV reported.

At least 19 employees currently remain unaccounted for, according to Humphreys County emergency management director Odell Poyner.

STATE-OF-THE-ART FACILITIES

Located on 1,300 acres in Bucksnort, TN, approximately fifty miles west of Nashville along Interstate 40, the AES production site is equipped with eight specialized production buildings and a quality lab dedicated to the evaluation and analysis of our products. Our manufacturing facilities are designed with environmental control systems to ensure optimal conditions for the production of high-quality energetics and explosives.

I wonder which of the facilities seen on the map exploded, looks like the main building right off the road? They have eight production buildings on site.

Devestating accident, I'll be following to see what caused the explosion.

Christ, how awful. I hope those in hospital make full recoveries. For the ones who didn't make it, hopefully it was at least quick and they didn't suffer

HICKMAN COUNTY, Tenn. (WZTV) — A Middle Tennessee mother is waiting for answers after a deadly explosion Friday morning at the Accurate Energetic Systems plant near Bucksnort left some people dead and several missing.

Ava Hinson says she still hasn’t heard from her son, Jeremy Moore, a longtime employee at the energetics and explosives manufacturing facility.

"I did find out it was the building, Building 602, that he worked in and that he was on the missing list," Hinson tells FOX 17 News.

"He’s my only son, and he would tell you that he is my baby boy," she said in tears. "He lives right next door to me, big old country boy."

Michael Hooper told FOX 17 News he was driving by the plant and saw the explosion.

"We thought something hit our truck," said Hooper. "All of a sudden, we saw a big cloud of smoke we realized there was an explosion. "

Hooper said his friend was at the site of the explosion when it happened.

"I heard that he might be dead and he was killed," said Hooper.

Accurate Energetic Systems is a defense and commercial explosives manufacturer. Documents revealed that there were several Tennessee Occupational Safety and Health Administration violations at the facility.

When you enter that scene — just because they’ve had the explosion, there could still be unexploded ordinances that are there. There could be things that are delayed reactions with explosives. You really want to take your time.

The sheriff said that he, along with other leaders, know multiple families that had loved ones involved in the explosion.

“We’re small counties, and when you have small counties like this, we know each other... we love each other,” he said.
Davis also urged anyone who believes debris from the explosion has drifted onto their property to contact law enforcement, saying it could be important to the investigation.

He estimated that debris has traveled at least half a square mile from the scene.
