NAMUS Circumstances:
My Uncle was a transient that road the railroad around the country. He would work awhile and then get back on a train. He always visited areas with family and always visited and stayed with them. The last anyone heard of him my cousin had a received a letter from him in Tiptonville TN, 1965. She wrote him back in the summer of 1965 and her letter was returned to her. To the best of my knowledge there was no inquiry at the time. His parents, brothers and sisters are all deceased. I am his niece and logically believe he is deceased. The goal is to bring him home.

He had an adventuresome life. They're getting DNA, perhaps they will find him in the database.

From above link states: Nickname/AliasRusty
Would be well into his 90s by now.

also, there are other, younger Rusty Samples that turn up in various databases and states. The age could be a son or relation perhaps but, no proof on my part of any relation just a wondering. Maybe a new lead to begging a search.

If he travalled to places where he had family, it would be interesting to know what places he had already visited and what were the possible next destinations.
Possible matches, taking into account the nearest states (Tiptonville is very close to several borders):

This one is rather promising, since he was located near the railroad tracks: The National Missing and Unidentified Persons System (NamUs)

Yes! Knowing where other family members lived would help us figure out which rail lines to follow.

This gentleman was a veteran -- do we know his unit? Did he correspondent with military buddies, too? He looks so young in that image!

He certainly had family in California. His mother died in 1969 at Fort Bragg in California (see Nora Bertha Kirk Samples (1888-1969) - Find a...). That this is the right family and correct Charles Daniel is confirmed by multiple family trees showing the parents as named on the link and him disappearing in the 60s. His father died in Oklahoma in 1962. A brother (Richard) died in Lebanon, Oregon in 1988; another brother and a sister died in California. So probably California and Oklahoma (where his family seem to have lived for some time) are obvious places for him to have travelled to be near family.
