GUILTY TN - Chris Newsom, 23, & Channon Christian, 21, murdered, Knoxville, 6 Jan 2007 #20

Did she get 41 years? 25 + 6 + 6 + 4 consecutive?

Sorry darcedarce, didn't see your post before I posted mine, but Jamie tweeted 43 years, I presume the 6 years she has served will be credited too.

Better than I thought Judge blackwood would do!

I thought the defence were really pushing it with their mitigating factors! :banghead:

ETA: Jamie is now saying 35 years. WATE.com was saying 41.
That will serve me right for posting breaking news.

Thank you for watching! I got distracted and missed the very end.

ITA with you Prairie Wind.

I know the defence have to plead for the minimum sentence, but really?:

(from Joe Jones link)

She was right where she wanted to be! She could have gone and turned them in at any time! She even held Channon captive on her own, when the guys went out, she could have saved her life! There was never any proof she was under duress and let us not forget her "Adventure in the big TN" diary entry she made! :furious:

Furthermore, I see no evidence of her new, mature attitude in her recent trial. She seemed to come across as the same Vanessa Coleman we saw the first time round! :furious:

I feel for her parents, they seem like decent people - but their daughter made her choices.

I am hoping that Judge Blackwood gives her a lengthy sentence. But, given some of his decisions involving these cases I am not holding my breath.

I apologise for my ranting, but Channon and Christopher's murders are probably one of the worst cases I have ever heard about.

As always my total sympathies lie with the Newsom and Christian families and friends.

I've always said this is the worst crime I've ever heard about.

She could be eligible for parole in 4.5 years. Did I read that right? Wow. She wont get parole then of course, but she is eligible. I would venture to guess she will be out in 10 years if she stays out of trouble.

It is interesting the comment Gary made about the letter he received from an inmate that relayed what Vanessa said about Channon screaming for her dad during the ordeal. There is no way to know if its true, but maybe someday we will know what happened in that house.

Ahh, your very welcome darcedarce.

I missed a lot of the sentencing though. Both Deena and Gary Christian got to tell the judge the impact that Channon's death has had on them. I have only seen what they said via Jamie Satterfield's court room tweets.

I hope that the hearing ends up on you tube so I can watch it in its entirety.

I expect the families of both victims will attend every parole hearing and will argue against any parole she may be requesting in the future, but she will one day get out,

Thats true, Joe Jones. But I do think that the families and the community will oppose every potential parole hearing that she has.

I've always said this is the worst crime I've ever heard about.

Aside from mutiple kill cases and serial killers, I have read about, this case is the most vicious and heinous I have ever heard of done by young perps to young people. So in this respect I would say it is the worst case I have ever heard of too, ILuvMua.

Wow, there's a great show about this case on the Oprah Winfrey Network right now. Some details I didn't know, even though I watched all the trials live.

Such a horrific story.

I sure dont understand the ruling on not allowing the photos. It is relevant evidence. Strange. As for the comments made by Thomas, I can't imagine those would not be allowed. They are clearly relevant to the State's case. His comments, along with those of the others along the way certainly show that race was a factor here. Maybe not enough for the prosecution to be comfortable with a hate crime charge, but certainly race played a part.

might as well the judge say no photos are allowed at all and for the jury to imagine what their desceased bodies looked like.

I am absolutely crushed at reading the “news” regarding the RETRIAL'S of these monsters. I had no idea until I did a google search just to see what might be new in the case hoping that nothing was new and everything was as I left it a couple years ago. I am so ashamed that I didn't check up on it sooner.

How is this even possible that we have to see these families go through this all over again because of some stoned judge! It is disgraceful that the justice system would allow this to happen. Haven't these families gone through ENOUGH? Gary Christian stated that the justice system is broken. I can only say that there are no truer words spoken than that.

I wish I was an American citizen so I could start an uproar. AGAIN their stories have skipped main stream media. Not even a stoned judge on the bench could attract the media to these trials! A judge… on the bench… STONED!!! That isn’t sensational enough? Really?

How is this even possible? Why wouldn't anyone working with this judge not say something? Anything! How many more cases are going to have to be retried because of this judge? And why did I have to "look" for some information regarding the status when it should be all over the news stations? What is wrong with the world? If they don't want to classify it as a hate crime then DON'T! Just say it's a brutal murder like we have never seen before! Don't even mention that the victims were white and the murderers were black. Don't display their pictures, just tell the story. And then at the very end, show their faces for the world to see. There has to be a way to report their story without making it look like a hate crime (even though I know it was!). Just TELL THE STORY!!! We need people to be aware of the injustice of it all. We need everyone to be ticked right off about this! Make the main stream media report on this so that the families can see that their children didn't die in vain. That is the bottom line here.

Channon and Chris and their families and friends deserve better than this!

Joe, has there been anything different in the state's case for this trial?

no, the defence has been better though, trying to show the jury over and over again that non of the evidence ties Thomas to any of the crimes, and emphasising that being present at the scene is not a crime,

the state has once again argued that it was a crime committed by them all whether they actually did any of the violent acts, and Thomas is as culpable as the others as he went along when he knew they were going carjacking and he went along with the kidnapping and the subsequent horrors that were perpetrated against both victims

we shall see if like VC he gets NG on some of the charges and thus at some point in the future my have a chance at parole, first trial he got LWOP
