The parking lot is at the top of the mountain. There is a recreational type area up there, with an ice skating rink, eateries, one larger restaurant with a full bar, some stores, and a nature type area where you can see bears, otters, etc. I think the parking lot is probably used more by employees than visitors because part of the whole experience is riding the tram up from town, but you could drive to the top and park if you wanted to. The tram operator on my last trip there said something about it could take a couple hours or so to walk up to the top. Probably less going down. But still I don't think our UID sounds dressed for taking a long hike, even though we have no idea what kind of shoes she may have worn. There are rental cabins close by plus owner-occupied residences. I would think she probably didn't disappear from a rental unless she had already checked out because I would assume LE would have connected the two events: someone disappearing from a rental with their belongings still there and this lady found under the tram.

I still think there could have originally been someone along with her who panicked and fled when she passed, maybe because they were sitting there doing drugs. Why they would steal her shoes in that case is a mystery to me, but stealing a purse seems more logical, both for possible cash and because her ID was probably in it. Maybe whoever was with her didn't want to be linked to her.

Most likely she was a visitor to the area which is why she has remained unidentified.

The exact description from Namus is "near Cove Mountain chalet, below tramway station at Gatlinburg Ski Lodge," if that makes it more precise for the locals.

Unfortunately it says here http://www.doenetwork.org/media/news157.html that:

"About a month later her decomposing body was found by someone taking a shortcut to a Cove Mountain chalet."

(bolded by me)

I don't think there's one place called "Cove Mountain Chalet" I think there are a number of chalets that fit that category, judging by an internet search.

Freda Denman? The resemblance to the 2D DoeNetwork sketch is striking.

https://www.findthemissing.org/en/cases/10403
http://www.doenetwork.org/cases/10uftn.html

I agree that she resembles the recon. Two things working against her: Freda is described as having a "slim build" but the UID had "a large build with small breasts". Also, it sounds as though Freda (and possibly her children) was murdered by her husband. The time frame is compelling, though.

More on Freda:

Ok. I'm tossing out an unlikely suggestion: Trenny Gibson

She's too young and too short, BUT she was 16 when she disappeared 3 years before Gatlinburg Gal was found. It IS possible she grew. And I do think the reconstruction looks like her.

She went missing from The Great Smoky National Park but a fair distance from Gatlinburg.

There are rumors floating around that she may have run away because she was in an interracial relationship. If she did run away, regardless of the reason, maybe she ended up on the mountain.

She's not on the list of rule outs. Maybe this woman was never reported missing because she was already missing.

Maybe her shoes were taken because her name had been written on them.I know people sometimes write their last name on the inside of their shoes.

Hmm. She's a little young but looks interesting. I wish we had more info. Colleen could be a good possible match for so many Does...

Appalachian Unsolved: The body under the tramway

http://www.wbir.com/news/local/appalachian-unsolved-the-body-under-the-tramway/478749224

According to Matthews, the Smithsonian Institution is ready to help. They can conduct something called stable isotope analysis, a process using bone samples that can identify the kinds of food a person ate, which can in turn perhaps pinpoint their geographic origin.

This Jane Doe could be from anywhere in the world, he said.

Matthews discounts the likelihood that the woman was a local resident because no one came forward to claim her or speak for her. He thinks she may have been from outside the United States.

Matthews said a folded sweater was found by the body, as if she'd set it there herself and then died.

The discovery that day nearly 43 years ago appeared to draw little press attention. A search of old newspaper records offers nothing. Channel 10's archives offer nothing.

The woman wasn't a homicide victim, according to Matthews, so there wasn't as great a sense of urgency to resolve the mystery.

There's an article in my local news today that states the tramway first opened in 1973, so this lady passed away underneath it not too long after it became operational. Somebody somewhere surely has to wonder what happened to her, unless she had cut her ties with her family. If she was a foreign visitor, it seems unlikely she'd be traveling in the USA alone, but then again she may have been an adventurous person who didn't mind traveling alone. Sad that she's remained unidentified for so long.
