Elizabeth “Liz” Lamotte (age 17)

Elizabeth was living at the Youth Development Center in Manchester New Hampshire, when she left to visit a local sports stadium on November 22, 1984. She never returned.

Months later on April 14, 1985, her body was found on the side of an interstate in Greenville, Tennessee.

An autopsy determined the cause of death was blunt force trauma to the head, and that she had likely been dead for two to three weeks.

Although she was finally identified in 2018, Elizabeth's murder remains an unsolved and open case.

I first posted this case on Websleuths in 2005 when it was already 20 years old.

In 2007, I suggested as a potential suspect, serial killer Fred Howard Coffey, Jr. I still feel that he might be worth looking into. He currently incarcerated in a North Carolina prison for the murder of a 10-year-old girl. He is also a prime suspect in the murders of at least two other children, and had previous convictions for child molestation and for the rape of a 13 year old girl (for which he was discharged from the Navy).

She had recently lost a pregnancy. I imagine she had a uterus that was still enlarged but no fetus for them to make that determination. JMO IMO.

Yes there is a local healing reaction of the lining and also a slightly enlargened, softened uterus. Actually it is possible to get fetal cells from the chorionic vili that are still in the endometrium after loss of pregnancy by microdissection and then get a DNA profile from the fetus, despite being lost or aborted. Today it would be possible to find out who the babies father was. But i guess there were no substantial tissue samples of the uterus kept.

Fred Howard Coffey, Jr. Had connections to this area, having come from Bristol, a city which straddles both Virginia and Tennessee.

Coffey is now 80 years old and serving a life sentence in Green Correctional Institution, North Carolina for the 1986 murder of a 10-year-old girl. He is known to have molested other children and is a named suspect in two other murders.

Coffey might not have been involved in the Lyon sisters abduction case, but very likely was involved in the abduction murder of Kathy Lynn Beatty who is also mentioned in your link. The article states that she was found less than a mile from his place of employment. That is putting it mildly. Kathy had to have walked next to or through the Vitro Laboratories parking lots where Coffey parked his car on the night she was attacked.

While there might not be enough solid evidence to charge Coffey in this or other cases, his track record of attacks on children and young adults, along with many "coincidental" factors make him a likely potential suspect.

The 1987 article linked states that Coffey was facing murder charges for killing 10-year-old Amanda Ray. Well, he was tried and convicted of that crime and sentenced to death. Following appeals, he was again convicted and sentenced to death, only to have the death sentence in 1995 changed to Life in prison with the immediate possibility of parole! Go figure. He has been denied parole every time since 1995, but comes up for it again in a couple of years.
