The son was taken to Memorial Hospital in Chattanooga but ultimately died on June 29. His body showed various signs of neglect, according to investigators.

Officials said John V. Hoover was “obviously emaciated and had pressure sores on his person.”

John Dennis Hoover allegedly confessed under questioning that he and his wife, Jacqueline Hoover "would withhold food from the victim to get him to shower and tied him to a bed at night to keep him from taking food,” according to the case’s affidavit.

According to Chattanooga television station WDEF-TV, one neighbor told the outlet that the couple’s son was often seen wandering about the family’s mobile home complex complaining he was hungry.

Both Hoovers were each charged with one count of first-degree murder and one count of willful abuse or neglect of an impaired adult. They are both being held at Silverdale Detention Center without bond. They are expected to appear before Hamilton County General Sessions Court Judge Christine M. Sell on July 7.

An investigation into the son’s death began on July 1, 2022.

The couple are being detained at the Silverdale Detention Center without bond.

I spoke with the manager of the mobile home park and the Hoovers’ next-door neighbor, but neither would go on camera.

The manager says the son would routinely walk up and down the complex, and the neighbor told me he would do so often telling people he was hungry.

What is wrong with people?!?!? I sincerely hope a neighbor gave him food and called protective services!!!! Adults with disabilities are protected by more rights than even a typical adult has. Why didn't they put him in a residential care facility instead of abusing him??? Let me guess... wanted his check? Enjoy torturing someone weaker because it gives them power? Makes me so freaking mad.

Well, his grandmother was his caregiver until she died. MOO there was a reason his father wasn't his caregiver. When Grandma passed his father and stepmother saw an opportunity to slide into his apartment (probably subsidized through John's disability) and make use of the funds meant for his care and comfort. They got a free place to live and access to his benefits to abuse as their own.

Disgusting subhuman behavior.

thank you for keeping updates. I've never followed a trial before, but this case is local to me and haunted me enough to make me lose sleep, and I wanted to follow through with it.

(I have nothing to offer besides what is known from MSM)

Absolutely horrible. Neglect is one of the most unforgivable crimes to me... may he rest in peace

How incredibly sad. He even walked around asking for help in the only way he could. I am not judging neighbors -- but it's very tragic.

per the Hamilton County Sherriff's Office website, the Hoovers have a court date set for 05/23. Forgive me for not knowing how to find more details.

IMO, not to cast any aspersions before the facts start coming out, but even though the stepmom had to have been complicit, there's already something leery to me about the fact that John D is older than my dad and Jacqueline is barely older than my older brother.

Next court date appears to be 6/22/23 for both

sad there's not more posts here, or likes... maybe as pre-trial gets started there will be more interest. We've (broad generalization of modern society) become desensitized to issues that used to spark such outrage. IMO

Sad there is NO picture to post of John V. Hoover here. Did anyone see one anywhere?

Sadly, his circumstances - foisted onto an elderly relative, questionably sociable, then abused and isolated - mean that I doubt there are many recent photos of him.

I'm surprised I haven't heard more about this case, despite being local to me. If I'm thinking of the right area from the news description, it's a very sleepy area, but still part of the major metropolitan area!

Then again, the Jasmine Pace murder was even closer to me and I didn't know until I saw her thread on WS, so I might just be really bad at having my ear to the ground.

screw this. i will hold my tongue because of privileged information. i am not a happy camper.
6 years!!!!!! For starving a disabled adult to DEATH!!!! Death. It is not easy to have someone die from lack of care. That takes a long time! This dude and his wife should never be let free. That's pathetic.
