Sorry to say this, but IMO this all comes down to an incompetent DA who doesn't have the where-with-all, or the mental capacity to prosecute a crime based on the evidence collected to date. Many, many crimes are charged, prosecuted and WON based solely on circumstantial evidence...of which I believe this case has plenty. Spouse with motive, means and opportunity. The DA in Dyersburg has a reputation and a nickname for failing to take cases to trial. I've heard the rumors, jokes and innuendos...the guy is lazy...just another public servant collecting a paycheck and doing little to serve the public. It is a local joke around those parts: if you want to get away with murder, do the crime in Dyer County. JMO

Would using Satellite picture taking technology have solved this crime and reduce other crimes ?

Read about that possibility on this page here: http://cruci34.angelfire.com/KarenSwift.html

It would be wonderful if that technology could be used for criminal cases but it would be very expensive. When wealthy adventurer/aviator, Steve Fossett, went missing in Nevada, Google Earth opened to the public real time satellite imaging to try to locate his plane. I participated and it was phenominal to find so many objects from this technology but not his plane as, I seem to recall, it was obscured by foliage.

I certainly hope that is not the case here! If it was a family member of his, I'm sure he'd be hot to trot in getting a prosecution!

According to Sheriff Box, a lot of evidence was processed and an arrest was imminent....when?

If Box doesn't at least make a statement on the one year anniversary announcing any updates in the case I would be surprised.

I too I'm wonder when. From the start Box spoke so confidently of justice being served, but still we wait and no one has been charged almost a year since Karen went missing.

The DA doesn't even have the case yet.

The DA doesn't even have the case yet.

Not "officially" perhaps, however, the last news report provides somewhat of a differing viewpoint:

"Some of the processing includes not only lab work, but taking the results of the investigation and having it prepared in a courtroom presentation format."

and:

"Box stated they are able to obtain this data from known information and sometimes through the collection and interpretation of data from the vehicle's computer.
"These results of the data are currently being complied in a computer-generated courtroom presentation format," said Box."

Now maybe I'm off base on these comments, but I've never seen a Sheriff department anywhere that prepares cases for "courtroom presentation". That type of work is done by the attorney's or their staff as a general rule.
I also recall Sheriff Box referring a reporter to the DA's office when they wanted answers to questions about the case. I'm not sure what article that was from, but I am certain I did read that. So why would the Sheriff deflect questions to the DA if the DA wasn't handling the case?
All JMO

ETA: At this stage of the case, it appears they have their POI (one person), so the investigation is pretty much wrapped up except for the evidence they are waiting on to come back from the lab, (and where, pray tell, is this "lab" that takes a year to process evidence?), but regardless, they know who did this, IMO, so why no arrest? Incompetent DA? Big, scary, high-profile defense lawyer? None of this makes sense. There is NO reason that anyone should just be out walking the streets so a few i's can get dotted or a few more t's can be put into "courtroom presentation" format. That is BS!!

Thinking of you today Karen.

What on earth is taking so long with this case? TN has some serious problems with actually getting someone into a court of law to face charges! Slow doesn't begin to describe it. If they don't know who murdered this beautiful woman by now, (which I sincerely believe they do know who is responsible), then they need to come clean and say so. To me, it's very clear that this case is just another tragic domestic homicide. All this "we are waiting for evidence to come back" BS is just that, BS! For crying out loud, you don't need every single piece of evidence to charge this guy! I pray daily for the safety of those children in his care and custody. That sheriff better be VERY confident that this doesn't end up to be another case like Josh Powell.

IMO,
I totally agree. I also followed this case since I was following the Holly Bobo case, and the 2 cases have a similar problem of nobody is being held accountable. I realize they are not super close together, but the 2 jurisdictions seem to have a similar problem, and both seem to be small in size.

It is ridiculous and inexusable. If they are just imcompetant, then they need to solicit help to get their job done.

I feel very sorry for the people that have to live in a community where there seems to be such inadaquate justice services. There are lives at stake.

Thinking of Karen's children on this anniversary, which must be hard when everyone else is so jovial/pranky today. I know the boys are older (both out of high school?) but does the husband have the girls?

Thinking of Karen today and hope all will be answered soon. It has been an exhausting and frustrating case, but at least they are investigating. Gail Palmgren's case was never really investigated, imo. (Signal Mountain,TN) Will never believe her death was an "accident"..but have to sadly accept it.) I am apprehensive whenever I see another missing person from TN. It just seems TN has a problem with missing cases..for sure.

Prayers for her family and friends today.

Glad to hear a conclusion is on the way. From the sounds of it we should hopefully know in a matter of a few days.

Although a year has passed, Dyer County Sheriff Jeff Box says sheriff's investigators are making arrangements to take the case to trial.

With no witnesses to Swift's murder, investigators have had to rely on interviews, highly technical data, circumstantial and physical evidence. Much of the physical evidence is DNA, which the TBI is just now finished processing.

"Next week, investigators will travel to the Nashville TBI forensics lab and pick up processed evidence in the case and bring it back to the sheriff's department," said Box.

Box said some media outlets have incorrectly quoted him, including a recent misquote by a Memphis television station in saying that investigators stated Karen Swift's husband David Swift was not a suspect in the case.

"That statement has been corrected at my request and our statement has been throughout this investigation that we have not named a suspect, or publicly identified any person of interest," said Box. "And furthermore, we have not disclosed anyone as not being either a suspect or a person of interest."

comment on the above article: strange that they have enough to go to trial (all the talk about getting ready for trial) yet they are not ready to arrest someone? It seems very backwards to me... I have never seen anything quite like it. :moo:

A few days, eh? I wish I was more optimistic about the latest news. A few days usually means months.

Hope I'm wrong and Karen will finally get the justice she deserves. The picture of Karen with her two beautiful daughters will always remain etched in my heart.

"investigators are making arrangements to take the case to trial"
