"Sheer luck": Suspect in deadly Tennessee crime spree in custody after manhunt - CBS News

“A picture released by the Tennessee Highway Patrol showed law enforcement taking the 53-year-old into custody in a wooded area. In the photo, Wallace appears dirty and is wearing camouflage clothing. The station reports he was heavily armed.

Henry County Sheriff Monte Belew, who made the arrest along with Cpl. Stacey Bostwick, attributed the capture to "sheer luck." He said he and Bostwick had used a bloodhound to determine Wallace's direction of travel early Friday. The two decided to move a short distance ahead of the "hot zone" where authorities had been searching. Belew said he and Bostwick positioned themselves in two hunting stands shortly after daylight that allowed them to view a large wooded area and a field from an elevated position..”

Murder suspect captured after dayslong manhunt in Tennessee

“Henry County Sheriff Monte Belew told a news conference Kirby Gene Wallace was carrying a loaded handgun and ready for a firefight when Belew and Cpl. Stacey Bostwick spotted him walking toward them at about 10:15 a.m. The officers had been hiding in two deer blinds since first light, and Wallace did not see them, Belew said.

"I let him get probably about 25 yards from me and then identified myself as sheriff's office, drew down on him. I had an AR-15 on him," Belew said. "He was very cooperative at first. I asked him to come to me, step to me, put your hands out to the side."”

A man accused of leading authorities on a manhunt across multiple counties pleaded not guilty Monday to the charges against him. Kirby Wallace appeared in court at the Stewart County courthouse at 8 a.m.

Agents with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation indicted a couple from Woodlawn for allowing Wallace to stay at their home while police were searching Stewart County for him. Derek Eugene Summers and Mindy Elaine Harris are charged with Accessory after the fact. They are expected to appear in court Monday, also.

Investigators say stolen property from a murder scene in Indian Mound was found at their home.

They are accused of harboring Wallace while he was on the TBI Most Wanted list.

On September 23, investigators say he attacked a couple in Indian Mound and set their house on fire, killing Brenda Smith.

Wallace is also accused of assaulting an elderly woman inside her house on River Road, in Montgomery County. On October 1, officers believe Wallace also killed a man and stole his truck, near Poplar Springs Road. He faces nine charges, including first-degree felony murder.
