TN TN - Pauline Pusser, exhumation, killed by gunfire while in a car driven by her husband McNairy County Sheriff Buford Pusser, 12 Aug 1967

Above it says self inflicted gun shot wound suspected....

I totally agree with @333_OnlyHalfEvil This smells like BS that he blew off his jaw for a cover story. Nobody does that. And if he had attempted suicide after murdering her, a Sheriff sure would aim better.
Maybe he was a coward and could not bring himself to do it correctly.

I'd love to see pictures of him that were taken after this incident, to see what the scarring from this wound looks like. Is it consistent with a major wound to the jaw, or is it a graze? I'd be more likely to believe he did the latter to himself than the former. It is harder than you'd think to inflict physical trauma/pain on yourself- our instincts fight against it. I even struggled to pierce my own ears! I mean, obviously, people have done it, but I'd be interested to see picture evidence in this case. MOO

There are some photos if you google it, but it doesnt show his entire face, so its not really possible to verify if its him....but they aint pretty...

These new reports are deeply troubling, one of the results of the autopsy of his wife was apparently some damage to her nasal area. So that automatically makes him a wife beater as well....because there is literally no other reason such wounds could have occured... absolutely.ridiculous.

To me this is simply a character assasination of the man who cannot defend himself anymore.

Here's a picture of him immediately after the incident, but all you can see is blood.

I'm curious about her nose. Was it an old fracture? Noses are pretty easy to break. Could it have been smashed against something like the dashboard while they were attempting to escape? No one wore seatbelts back then; not even sure how many cars had them installed even. The nose seems like small potatoes in this scenario.

I think it’s kind of sketchy that Pauline “insisted” on accompanying the Sheriff on a 4:30 AM call. JMO

And was this normal behavior for her? Did she often go on calls in the middle of the night?

Imagine being in a domestic violence situation like this poor woman was. She had nowhere to turn for help.

There was no good character to assassinate though? His entire gimmick was being a needless a-hole. All the new information lines up exactly with the kind of person he was.

We'll he nearly killed Jimmy Buffet according to him! Buford didn't play around.

He sounds more like a town bully than a law abiding citizen.
Agreed. Instead of cleaning up the "Dixie Mafia" it sounded like he wanted to take over their action.

I'd never heard about this case until the 'police update coming tomorrow!' post last week and, like, 5 minutes of reading about this case and this guy had me expecting that he'd be named as his wife's killer.

The notion that his wife would ride along to a mysterious meet-up point in the wee hours of the morning seems utterly ridiculous, as a start.

It's also interesting that he was apparently shot or stabbed on *fifteen* different occasions in 6 years as sheriff, which seems hilariously impossible. Wondering if he took his wrestling background and how wrestlers cut themselves to bleed/get audience reactions and adapted that to his job to build his reputation and generate sympathy.

In reading comments on a FB post about this crime, the Sheriff has a lot of support. I think his injuries make the accusation of him being a murderer seem impossible to them. One thing I've learned after many years of living is never to say never when it comes to people and their actions.

Pusser is a suspect in the murder of one of the "People that shot him and his wife." One of the people he tangled with was a guy named Knox who is serving a life sentence. The entire group that was involved, including Pusser, were all brutal people.

Maybe she was afraid he was meeting up with another woman? IDK, it is fishy. No man is worth me having to crawl out of bed at 4:30 am, personally. He reminds me of a wolf in sheep's clothing.
