Press conference

15th June.

Reporter: (Asking about the Red truck). Is that something you're looking for? (inaudible).

Newport: I would tell you yes, just to eliminate. We still don't have a good timeline of when that was observed. People that frequent areas on a regular basis get their dates and get days mixed up. We still want to figure out who, if possible and if that's even a legitimate lead. As she said earlier, we followed a lot of dead leads that didn't produce anything. So, that obviously is still something we want to put to bed, but we still can't pinpoint a date and an exact location of that truck.
So, there still isn't an answer about the truck.

Thank you, @Allabouttrial for transcribing the press conference. I had a hard time hearing and understanding most of it, no matter what video source I went to. I didn't even realize that someone asked about the red truck. I had the same question.
Thanks again, greatly appreciated!

Has there been any information out that covers if the players in this case have been brought in for questioning lately? I've not seen nor heard of anyone being brought in for questioning.

Why did you release information about a Toyota Truck?
An individual who travels through the area regularly as part of his job stated that he recalls possibly seeing a 1998-2000 maroon or red Toyota Tacoma, with a full bed ladder rack and white buckets in the truck bed. The individual stated that the truck might have been parked in the area of Beech Creek Road and Ben Hill Road in the late afternoon to early evening on either Monday, June 14th, or Tuesday, June 15th. That vehicle was not captured on surveillance cameras. In an effort to cover all bases and identify the driver, the TBI, in agreement with the Hawkins County Sheriff’s Office and the FBI, released the vehicle description. Our hope was that the individual might have information that could help the investigation. The driver has not come forward, nor have the hundreds of vehicles reported to us as matching the description panned out.

My primary theory remains the same. Little SW wandered off while CB-W and CH snoozed off their busy day. SW met with misadventure, is very close to the home, yet to be found. I have promoted the idea of her resting on a secondary surface, having slipped between rocks or down a ravine/slope. Drop cams should be used to rule this out.

While I don't consider this next theory to be a close second, I would like to pose a question to all for contemplation. Let us assume for a moment that there was something premeditated that resulted in SW's disappearance. WHY then? WHAT was the impending event that would trigger the timing for her to disappear on that day?
Did it have anything with her starting school...or what else? WHY THAT DAY?

I think this is worthy of some contemplation.

Thank you for posting the link. I love the work Meaghan does with The Charley Project website. I hate the fact that Summer has a profile; it's been a year. :(

Details of Disappearance

Summer was last seen at her home in the 100 block of Ben Hill Road in the Beech Creek area of Rogersville, Tennessee between 5:30 and about 6:30 p.m. on June 15, 2021.

Her older brothers said she went down into the basement to play, and they never saw her after that. She has never been heard from again; her family said she simply disappeared without anyone seeing or hearing anything out of the ordinary. An extensive search turned up no sign of her, although search dogs tracked her scent through the woods at the end of Ben Hill Road.

Eleven days after Summer disappeared, authorities asked the public for information about a truck that had been seen in the area in the later afternoon to early evening hours of June 14 and June 15. The truck is described as a red or maroon 1998 - 2000 Toyota Tacoma with a full-bed ladder rack and white buckets in the bed.

The vehicle, and its driver, have not been identified. Authorities stated the driver isn't a suspect, but they want to talk to the person and find out what they know and what they might have seen.

Summer's family was investigated for possible involvement in her disappearance. There have been domestic violence issues between her parents, Donald Wells and Candus Bly, and Donald has been arrested for domestic violence on multiple occasions. He stated he was at work when Summer disappeared, and that both he, Candus and Candus's mother had all passed polygraphs about Summer's disappearance.

For unclear reasons, Summer's three older brothers, aged between seven and twelve years old, were removed from the family home by the Tennessee Department of Children's Services about a month after Summer's disappearance. After their removal, police questioned them about the case. They've also interviewed people who had stayed at the home in the months prior to Summer's disappearance.

Authorities haven't named anybody as a suspect in Summer's case. Donald stated he believes his daughter was abducted by someone outside the family.

Summer's aunt, Rose Bly, disappeared from Wisconsin in 2009 and has never been found. The two cases are not thought to be related. Both remain unsolved.

Given what facts we know, I've never thought the boys knew anything. Never saw anything, never heard anything.
They were at home, in the house, playing online, when Summer allegedly went missing from the property that day.
I agree with you. I don't think they know anything. Also, I re-read my earlier post. I didn't mean to suggest that anything sinister happened or that the family would prevent the boys from speaking. I feel for this family. They've been scrutinized more than most. Their grief and struggles just happened to intersect in front of a nationwide audience.

I agree with both of you. I’m not certain the boys knew or said anything. This entire case is both confusing and heartbreaking. I wish we had more info and I wish the red truck story would die because I don’t believe any of that. IMO

I had forgotten that the children's Aunt, Rose Bly, had gone missing in Wisconsin. Tragedy upon tragedy.

Eh, if you poked around my yard you’d likely find “carcasses” of “partially buried” sippy cups, blocks, and probably a headless Barbie. I have to prep our yard weekly for our lawn service and I’m always finding random things. It’s what little kids do. I wouldn’t read too much into it.
Agree. I am hoping though the property has surveillance. There have been so many distractions.

I have to disagree on the "red truck story." Multiple searches have been done without finding Summer or any hint of what happened to her. The police haven't ruled out the "red truck" and they found the witness credible. Given the amount of publicity, the driver of that truck almost has to know they are looking for him. Why hasn't he come forward to answer questions?

I appreciate your thoughts but I believe he mainly hasn’t come forward because it’s been a red herring and not a red truck. We have no verifiable info regarding said truck and I’m no longer willing to entertain the thought that this is an abduction. LE know more and aren’t disclosing so I prefer to leave it at that for now. Again I appreciate your comments.

I was so glad to see this from my local news on facebook this morning.
I want SW to stay in the news everywhere, not to fade away like an unsolved mystery.

The driveway leading to the house has almost eroded away. As you trek up the hill toward the home, forgotten toys covered in grass and vines line the dirt

Near the top of the hill, you step on the carcass of a partially buried doll. Then you see the house; part of it is covered in yellow siding while the rest is exposed plywood. The yard is full of old vehicles and miscellaneous items.

When you leave the house and approach the entrance to Ben Hill Road, you see missing child signs with Summer’s photo.
Tim Coup, captain of the CHRS, acted as the incident commander of search operations for 10 of the 13 days that emergency personnel combed the area.

Coup said Summer’s disappearance impacted him on an emotional level, which encouraged him to put his very best efforts into searching for

“I joined the rescue squad to assist and give back to my community,” Coup said. “I also have a small child of my own, and the way this call was, it laid heavy on my heart that I had to be there and do everything that I could do to try and locate Summer Wells.”

An almost eerie description that gave quite a visual! TY for that post instill.grandma.

It would seem that the church the Wells family was attending was very caring towards the family. It certainly would be nice to see the whole church (with permission of course), show up and help get that property and house in better shape. I know it wouldn't bring Summer back, but it could serve as a sign of hope.

I wonder how they (assuming LE, TBI?) know that THE truck isn’t among the hundreds reported? There must be something more they know about the truck that makes it unique to still include it in Summer’s disappearance. What is that thing and why haven’t they released it?
