“No matter what happens, I can’t get my daughter back. I’ll never get my daughter back,” RN said.

A copy of the indictment says “between May 20, 2019 and August 9, 2019 in Shelby County, Tennessee and before the findings of the indictment, did unlawfully and knowingly kill Taquila Hayes.”

His bond has been set at $2 million.

[...]

“He gave us motive," RN said. "When I asked him where was my child, instead of answering me directly, he told me all this stuff that has transpired over the years: this, that, and the other.”

Family, friends hold special vigil in honor of missing Cordova woman’s birthday

February 22, 2020 at 9:56 PM CST - Updated February 23 at 7:42 AM
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - Family and friends of a missing Memphis woman whose husband is charged with her murder gathered on her birthday in her memory.

With Taquila Hayes’ name on their shirts, her face on photos and her spirit in their hearts, loved ones struggled with their emotions and supported each other on what would have been her 42nd birthday.

Snip

Through tears, those who knew and loved Taquila Hayes sang and spoke about their memories of her and used the birthday vigil to raise awareness of domestic violence.

A year later, authorities are still looking for Taquila Hayes’ body

CORDOVA, Tenn. — It's been one year since the family of a Cordova mom and nurse reported her missing.

In February, FOX13 reported Taquila Hayes’ husband, Carl, was indicted with second-degree murder and tampering with evidence.

Detectives still have not found Taquila's body.

One year later, detectives are still seeking tips from the public.

The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office has said that it’s very unlikely that someone would just disappear without a trace.

“If Carl Hayes has a heart or a conscience to just please give me my daughter’s remains so I can lay her to rest, so her son can have closure, so our family can have closure,” said Roberta Nutall in May of 2020 when we interviewed her.

Her 41-year-old daughter Taquila was a nurse.

Nutall told FOX13 the journey to justice had just begun with Carl Hayes behind bars.

“Cause I’m going to fight this until I die,” she said.

FOX13 was at the couple’s Cordova home one year ago as detectives and the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation searched inside.

Investigators noticed a new carpet inside Taquila’s car.

A detailed search warrant revealed Carl admitted he switched the SIM card in Taquila’s cell phone and pretended to be his wife communicating with others.

Two sentences in the above article caught my eye:

"Investigators noticed a new carpet inside Taquila’s car."

"A detailed search warrant revealed Carl admitted he switched the SIM card in Taquila’s cell phone and pretended to be his wife communicating with others."
I'm sure those two details helped to shape the investigation, IMO. I know if I was LE, I would know who was responsible, IMO

Taquila Hayes’ mother speaks out, says her daughter’s body still hasn’t been found (wmcactionnews5.com)
[...]

“All I’m asking for is my daughter’s body. I want her remains, so we can lay her to rest and Carl is the only one who knows,” Roberta Nutall, Hayes' mother, said.

[...]

Nutall says her daughter would also never leave her son who is now 13. She now has custody of him.

She has a plea for Carl Hayes.

“It has affected him and if you care about anything, care about the fact that he has a son that wants to know where his mother is,” she said.

[...]

Carl Hayes' attorney told WMC Action News 5 he maintains he did not murder his wife. Because of the pandemic, it is not clear when he will go to trial.

Taquila Hayes’ mother contacted WMC when she heard skeletal remains were found on the southern end of Mud Island. Roberta Nutall feared it may be her daughter.

The anxiety of not knowing is always with her.

“It’s skeletal remains. That’s what really made me think,” said Nutall. “What really made me think cause from 20 months ago. She would just be skeletal remains.”

That is the nightmare of Nutall’s life.

Her 41-year-old daughter, Taquila, disappeared in May 2019. Her husband Carl Hays was charged with second-degree murder after investigators searched the couple’s Cordova house taking away evidence as well as noting fresh paint was on the walls and new carpeting installed.

Nightmare may be an understatement. So heartbreaking for Taquila's family, but I hope this is her so she can be laid to rest at last. :(

Noting location - about 25 miles west of the home: 9300 Starcross Ave, Cordova, TN 38016 to Mud Island Park, Memphis, TN - Google Maps

I was also glad to read that CH is still behind bars. Unfortunately, no trial date yet.

"It is not clear when his case will go to trial. He has pleaded not guilty."

A little more information on the remains found.

Police investigating human remains found at Mud Island Park (wvlt.tv)
  • A landscaping crew removing tall brush on the south end of the island found bones...
  • Mud Island Park sits in the Mississippi River near downtown Memphis and is a popular destination for tourists and local residents.
JAN 24, 2021
Investigation launched after skeletal remains found on Mud Island (wmcactionnews5.com)
  • Investigators do not know the gender, race, or cause of death.
  • A remote area on the South Side of the Mud Island Park is where the remains were found - a couple of hundred yards away from the giant “Memphis” sign.
  • People who walk in this area said for several months during the year this part of the park is submerged in water from the Mississippi River.
  • When that water recedes, this area is normally covered in a prickly brush.
  • It’s unclear if the remains were placed at this spot or if they washed up in the Mississippi River.

It’s often said the wheels of justice turn slowly and Hayes’ mother still waits for that justice. We talked to Roberta Nutall on the phone Monday after she initially showed up at 201 Poplar expecting to see her former son-in-law in court.

“I just miss my daughter. Her family misses her, I mean it just doesn’t seem real,” Nutall said.

[...]

“He literally just wanted to wipe my daughter off the face of the Earth you know like she never existed,” Nutall said.

For the last few years, the family has had to celebrate holidays without the nurse and mother.

“Yesterday was Mother’s Day. It was really hard,” Nutall said.

No, no, no! This is not justice. He'll be out at age 63 if he serves every bit of that sentence, and you know he won't. Where is Taquila, Carl?! MOO

Nutall [Taquila's mother] said that this is a victory in the case, but it doesn’t necessarily offer closure to the family.

“We know that she is not here, we know that she’s no longer here. She is deceased. But I would love still to have her body so we can properly lay her to rest,” said Nutall.

Nutall says police and the Shelby County Sheriff’s office are still accepting tips in the case that could help lead them to Taquila’s body. If anyone saw anything out of the ordinary in May 2019, please contact authorities.
