No Silver Alert issued in search for missing Carter County man | WJHL | Tri-Cities News & Weather

NO Silver Alert Issued

A Carter County 65-year-old has been missing since last Thursday, July 1, but a Silver Alert has not been issued by local law enforcement.

Tom Hastings wandered off from his residence on Laurel Highlands Road between Thursday night and Friday morning. Hastings suffers from dementia.

Cythia Hollis, Hastings’ wife and caretaker, last saw him when she put him to bed Thursday. She believes he wandered out their back door because he was not captured on their security camera in the front.

According to the Carter County Sheriff Office, 65-year-old Thomas Hastings was last seen near Laurel Highlands Road on July 1 wearing a gray NC State sweatshirt and gray sweatpants.

Hastings has dementia, according to his family.

Cynthia Hollis is Tom Hastings’ wife. She said she last saw him on Thursday. When she went to wake him up for breakfast on Friday, he was gone from his bed.

Hollis said he would often go wandering. A security camera video provided by Hollis from Thursday shows Hastings walking on the deck unattended.

A family-organized search party took place from 8 a.m. to around 3:30 a.m. Tuesday. They found no trace of Hastings in the woods surrounding the home.

“They searched all the way from here to the highway and were not able to find a shoe, a piece of cloth or anything,” said Hastings’ sister Kathy Maly.

No Silver Alert issued in search for missing Carter County man | WJHL | Tri-Cities News & Weather

The family says the Carter County Sheriff’s Office told them Hastings’ missing persons case had been in the National Crime Information Center database, but the sheriff’s office had not issued a Silver Alert.

Silver Alerts are new to Tennessee. The law that allows agencies to request them from the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation went into effect on July 1. TBI confirmed they had not received one from the Carter County sheriff.

The law states that any missing individual 60 years or older, with a documented case of dementia or with a physical or mental disability is eligible for a Silver Alert.

Law enforcement agencies must “notify the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation within four hours of receiving the notice of the missing citizen,” according to the law.

They (the family) believe one needs to be issued so more people can be on the look-out for Hastings.

So glad a silver alert was finally issued!

I feel so bad seeing these cases and hope he is found soon.
Looking at the map, that address looks to be surrounded by woods. Prayers said for the searchers:

I know there are different types of trackers available for patients diagnosed with cognitive impairment and wish they were made available free of charge to the family as they can be lifesavers if the person walks away and becomes lost.

Bloodhounds and community members assist in the search for Thomas Hastings | WJHL | Tri-Cities News & Weather

A Carter County man remains missing after disappearing from his home last Thursday.

Family members told News Channel 11 that 65-year-old Thomas Hastings has dementia and has been known to wander off before, but never like this.

His wife, Cindy Hollis, said he must’ve left the house sometime late Thursday into early Friday morning.

While Hastings could be anywhere, they strongly believe he went into the woods behind the home.

“With the type of shoes he had on and his mobility issues, he couldn’t have gotten very far. It would be hard for Tom to get far, but we’ve got to look in nooks and cranny’s for him,” said Maly.

It's so sad! You feel so helpless with these cases.

From my last post about trackers, I was so glad to read this in the article and that they are getting the word out to any loved ones:

"Lunceford said the department offers a free service to help families keep track of loved ones.

“If you have a family member that is elderly and has any form of mental incapacitation or if you have a child with any kind of mental incapacitation that may wander, please come and see us,” he said. “We have the ability at the sheriff’s office to put a bracelet on these individuals. We do it at our cost. It doesn’t cost the family anything.

“We maintain the batteries, the equipment. We change the batteries out, put fresh batteries in it. Please come and see us so that this doesn’t happen again.”
