Father of Man Accused in Brutal Murder Speaks Out Sarah McCarthy 7:22 PM, Sep 26, 2017

Exactly two weeks after 12-year-old Yhoana Arteaga was brutally murdered inside her own home, the man now charged in her death was mowing the victim's lawn. On that day, a NewsChannel 5 reporter and photographer spoke with 45-year-old Roy Coons Jr. who said he frequently cared for the Arteaga family's lawn, because they paid him to do so.

"He gave them a hard time the first day they talked to him and they stayed after him the whole time," said Coons' father, who lived with Coons at the time of the murder. "Finally they just went ahead and charged him; said they got DNA. Well heck, they went down there and cut the people’s grass, talked to the little girl and everything."

Coons' father believes his son is innocent.

When NewsChannel 5 spoke to Coons before his arrest, he insisted the Arteaga family must know the killer. He also suggested police expand their search outside of the mobile home park where he and the Arteaga's lived.

This is local to me. My son's best friend lives in the trailer park and I'm shocked they haven't made an arrest yet. Metro hasn't said much but I hope they have a good idea who did this.

My :heartbeat: goes out to you, your son and his friend as affecting all of you. :grouphug: For children to have this type of impact and potentially knowing/have interacted with a murderer at such a young age directly is so saddening.

How is your son, your son's best friend and you holding up?

Roy Coons Jr. has been charged with the murder and attempted rape of 12-year-old Yhoana Arteaga.

Coons’ family spoke to News 4 on Thursday.

Two relatives, who did not want to be identified, said Coons had lived with them until about four months ago. They said they kicked him out because of his mental issues.

“It’s the most horrible thing I have ever known him to possibly do,” one relative said.

It’s hard for the women to call Coons family.

“Even though we had nothing to do with it, I feel like someone in the family should say I am sorry. I am sorry for your loss. I can't imagine what you are going through,” a relative said.

Coons’ family said he's suffered with mental illness for years.

“In his picture you can tell he has been off his medication for a long time. It’s in his eyes,” a relative said.

The women said they kicked Coons out of the house after he lost his temper too many times with the children.

“I said, like, ‘Pack your (expletives) and get out of the house. You will not talk to these kids like that. You will not be around them like that. I am not going to have you in my house like that, period,’” a relative said.

The women said they remember when he had a standoff with Metro police at a Nashville funeral home in the ‘90s.

“There has got to be a point where they are not getting out anymore,” a relative said.
