Something snapped at Toronto City Council Monday afternoon, and it wasn’t just Rob Ford’s cerebral cortex. Watching the mayor and his brother strutting about the council chamber — ignoring the Speaker, taunting other councillors, shouting down city officials, screaming insults at spectators, the whole carried out with an air of anarchic glee — was to sense the last tether connecting our politics to some sort of civilized norms breaking under the strain. We are adrift now, floating wildly, with no idea of where we will end up.

The Fords have picked fights, dodged blame, sprayed accusations, and issued threats (“If you wanna get nasty we can get nasty,” the mayor told an interviewer, “I can start digging up dirt on every single one of those politicians…”).

All of which should make abundantly clear that it is time to put aside the therapeutic language, the Oprah-like pleas to the mayor to “get help” or “seek treatment.” We are long past that point. The mayor’s actions Monday were quite deliberate. They reflected the influence, not of intoxicants, but his own limitless ego and unformed character. As such it is not Ford who has the problem; it’s the city. The message he needs to hear, from every corner, is not get help, but get out.

In the comments section, some of the commenters happened to be in the public gallery and they confirm that Doug and Rob initiated the insults against the members of the public by taunting and goading them, and that it appeared to be calculated and staged. One was kind of shocked at his first time council meeting, to be called scum LOL. City Hall will never be the same..

I don't even live in Ontario but it's embarrassing as a Canadian to have this man running the biggest city in Canada. I can't imagine what it's like to have him as your mayor!

I thought we had it bad when our premier was busted in Hawaii for impaired driving, he survived that scandal and was somehow re-elected...

So what does he need a full time driver for now? The first time it appears that he's had one, other than paying his friend Lisi (an alleged drug dealer and extortionist with a criminal record) to drive him around occasionally, which was probably more for Lisi's benefit than his, just to have him on the payroll. Looks like a waste of good old taxpayer money to me. You know...something that he would NEVER do. Waste taxpayer money. Not even by giving his "loyal" staff (those who didn't rat him out to the police during the investigation or quit altogether due to his impossible behaviour) two raises since this scandal broke? That's two raises in 6 months.

They suspected that some of the hecklers were CUPE members (public sector union) who were taking the day off. So they wanted 'evidence' for the public shaming union-bashing campaign.
This photography thing is a favourite stunt of Ford ally Giorgio Mammolitti, who published a photo of a public employee sleeping at his desk in a community centre a couple months ago. Also, he was at the Dyke March last year with a camera hoping to capture disreputable behaviour in an effort to cut funding for Pride Week (which brings in tens of millions of dollars in tourism revenues each year).
Of course he only went to the Dyke March, where one could expect to find endless topless blond lesbians parading about. He didn't go to the bigger parade the next day, probably out of fear that he would be assaulted by endless nymphomaniac homosexuals flaunting their perversions bla bla bla.

What a mess of an interview that was. Good for Matt in keeping it on track and not allowing them to steer it off course as they're famous for doing. They don't let anyone talk, they interrupt and talk over people and Matt wasn't having any of it. Now these interviewers just need to be equipped with the facts regarding the fact the RF did not save the taxpayers a billion dollars no matter how much his brother keeps trying to repeat that. They need to do a full interview with a full audit of just what has been done and how he can taken personal responsibility for it.

Rob Ford's unchecked lies to Peter Mansbridge ...

In the first two-and-a-half minutes of his lengthy CBC interview Monday, Rob Ford told three lies. They were uncontested by Peter Mansbridge, and it went downhill from there.

The first lie: “The people elected me with the largest mandate in Canada’s history.”

The second lie: “Having the lowest tax increase of any major city in North America.”

The third lie: “I’ve showed up every day to work for the last 13 years.” ...

Mansbridge is pretty professional and sophisticated ... I think he didn't call ROFO on the lies because he knows the public aren't the ones who are stupid ... what splats out of ROFO's mouth speaks for itself.

His cottage is actually on a tiny lake just outside the "village proper" where my family lived for over 120 years. I only ever heard the cottage inhabitants referred to as "a bunch of yahoos".

Personally, I would find it ironic and deliciously hilarious if Kathleen Wynne was able to do something that could remove him totally from office ... as homophobic as he seems to be, that would really smart, eh?

I have not read this entire thread, just saw the MSM that he chose not to go to rehab. A true addict can not quit without treatment. I'm curious to know how long this 'never going to touch alcohol again' is going to last. Without treatment, he'll be right back out there again, it's just a matter of time.

Ford has been asked repeatedly whether he is seeking professional help for his drug and alcohol problems and has been evasive when it comes to specifying what kind of help he has sought.

On Monday, he told Mansbridge he is "dealing with professionals."

"I'm dealing with my health issues," he said, specifying that those issues include his "excessive drinking at times," his health and his weight but not drugs.

"I don't do drugs," he said by way of explanation.

OK so the crack-smoking happened in FEBRUARY? Is that what the Star is reporting? I thought Ford was saying it happened a about a year ago, in 2012. Very interesting. I think he may have done it more than once, not a big shocking surprise, I'm sure. JMO

The police document states that the video was filmed in February of 2013 and done &#8220;surreptitiously.&#8221; The document also states that &#8220;the Mayor was apparently in the company of several individuals at the time of the recording.&#8221; No identities of those people are given in the document.
After learning in May (the document indicates Lisi learned of it prior to the May 16 publication of the crack video stories) that someone was trying to &#8220;sell the video to various media outlets&#8221; police allege Lisi made aggressive attempts to obtain the video.
&#8220;(Lisi) placed several threatening/extorting phone calls to individuals he felt may be in possession of the video recording,&#8221; the document states, noting the time period of the alleged threats was Thursday May 16 to Saturday May 18. &#8220;The accused insinuated that there would be consequences for the failure to return the video recording depicting the video images of the Mayor.&#8221;
The target of the alleged extortion attempts were two men, Liban Siyad and Mohamed Siad. Siad is the man who filmed the video, the Star has previously reported. Both men lived near the Dixon City towers that are a stones throw from 15 Windsor, the bungalow where the video was filmed.
The description of the video being filmed in February, and Ford apparently doing drugs at the time, is at odds with comments by Ford in recent days. Ford has said he has not done drugs for a year.
