I'm glad they didn't do this in Florida. Marrying my roommate of the last four years is definintely NOT an option. *hurl*

So now it is revealed what we knew all along, this has nothing to do with "boarding houses" but the Catholic view of unwed couples having children out of wedlock.

I have a funny feeling that Black Jack is not going to hit 21 on this ordinance, and they are going to have to pay a for a costly lawsuit and civil damages.

The city is inposing their moral values upon the people of this city......do what we say or get out.

Now the whole world knows about this "little" town......open to scrutiny.

That is incredibly ignorant .:banghead:
The mayor of that town should be arrested for trying to break up a family .
I'll bet women aren't allowed to walk down the street after dark unaccompanied by a man , too . More political correctness run amok !

North Carolina courts declared bans on unmarried couples living together UNCONSTITUTIONAL!

That ruling showed that "the government has no business regulating relationships between two consenting adults in the privacy of their own home"

http://www.cnn.com/2006/LAW/07/20/cohabitation.law.ap/index.html

Hopefully where these people live a similar ruling will follow.

I live in this area though not in Black Jack itself. I can tell you 2 things. There are "wanna be" politicians involved...can't get elected to a real office...this is their claim to fame and without trying to step on anyone's sensitive toes here, I will say that the government body and the people actually involved do not, for the most part, have the same skin color...enough said.

I can believe that. I am from NC and I came from a small town. This is the only time I can remember this being brought up in my life time. This just makes us look ridiculous and backwards. I assure you we are not all that way. Hubby and I were breaking the law for at least 2 years.

In a world that is full of broken or dysfunctional families, you shouldn't be messing with the ones that aren't, and potentially causing problems in thier family situation that aren't currently there. Who cares if they aren't married, they seem to be happy with thier situation and that's all that should matter, as long as the children are happy and well taken care of.

If they want to prevent multiple families from living together in one home and being overcrowded, that is understandable, but these people are clearly 1 family, not multiple ones and should never have even had this law presented to them and brought up as an issue IMO

I definately see it as an invasion of thier privacy and right to make thier own choices in thier lives. Does that state not have the "common law marriage" circumstance like other states do, where as after a period of several years living as a married couple you are considered married in the eyes of the law regardless of the actual marriage certificate/ceremony?

Also wanted to mention, sounds like they bought a fairly nice decent size home, probably cost quite a bit....sounds as if they are hard working people, he has a good job and they seem to have financial stability, so even if discrimination of lower class people were the driving force behind this outdated law, then they don't seem to fit that scenerio either.

I truly hope it isn't race discrimination, as has been mentioned. The color of thier skin should not matter, the quality of thier character is what should matter. Would the community rather get a drug dealer in the neighborhood, or a child molester, what about a rapist or murderer? I personally would rather have a good hard working, law abiding, non-married family move in next to me then run the risk that I might end up with someone much worse by pushing them away with an absurd law. :(

Even though living together before marriage is not for me personally, I don't know how this can be declared legal. I would think any attorney with a fourth of a brain could make mincemeat out of this ordinance.

I'm glad you cleared that up curious1, I was beginning to wonder.

Okay, I am from NC and I thought we had what they call 'common law marriages'. You know, if you live together 10 years or more you are considered 'common law' spouses. So how can living together be illegal? :waitasec: I don't even know the laws in my own state. :p
