I think that ALV pausing when answering is tell that she is trying to weigh what answer will be effective for JA & not hurt her Self Defense claim ie Does some abusive women kill their partners just to get away from abuse?

That would NOT be self defense but premeditation to kill their tormentor than again simply walking out the door. JMO

JA was NOT trying to CALM the situation, she was behaving in a passive-aggressive manner IN ORDER TO ESCALATE THE SITUATION.
