#OscarTrial Derman: I’m in a criminal trial here, there are two sides. BB

barrybateman · 1m

#OscarTrial Nel: but you never addressed this in your report and didn’t address in evidence in chief. BB

#OscarTrial Derman referred to a study showing disabled people are more susceptible to crime.
Nel - it deals mainly with mental illness. BB

I get the feeling the Dr has not seen the video

Very possible.

This tweet is not about trial, but rather about the video:

#OscarPistorius "The story was run in Australia only and not made available to any other territory.” BB

Exactly what finding or opinion of Dr D's is Nel disagreeing with? I have gotten lost in the trees, as I'm afraid Nel may have also.

The study in question is the one D quoted last week. it only has one SA reference, Nel points out, and 'that's irrelevant' to 'this case'.

N: The SA study dealt with abuse of people with dementia by family members ....

D concedes it isn't relevant but he only used that reference stucy to show how people with a disability are more subject to abuse.

Barry Bateman‏@barrybateman #OscarTrial Nel reads study Derman referred to - abuse of people with dementia by carers. Derman agrees it’s not relevant to this case. BB

  • #226
Nel sounds a bit irritated as WD skirts around question of what the report is about.

Nel shows that study Derman cited about disability and crime focuses, in particular, on victims with mental, not physical, problems.

Nel: The SA study dealt with dementia. That study for purpose of this case is irrelevant.

WD: let me explain

I think Nel may get out of his depth if he gets too deep into disputing clinical findings, and D will just take over the cross yet again.

....as he is doing.

  • #228
"amputation problem" ??

  • #229
The disability of this group in his report was dementia?

WTF is this guy doing. :floorlaugh:

  • #230
D: Individuals with mental illness of abuse of people with a disability...

  • #231
Why are all these hideous "experts" the ones that are on the stand forever?

  • #232
Has Derman combined/conflated mental and physical disabilities in his testimony?

Seems so. Go Nel.

  • #233
Ach. Nel is now onto USA stats for abuse victims with disability. Most at risks are those with 'cognitive' impairments.

(CA has some very good research on this, by the way).

  • #234
Exactly what finding or opinion of Dr D's is Nel disagreeing with? I have gotten lost in the trees, as I'm afraid Nel may have also.

I thought it was in reference to the testimony Prof Derman gave about the disabled people being statistically more likely to be the victim of a crime and think Nel was trying to infer that Prof Derman used cited a paper that used mentally disabled rather than physically disabled people.

I'm probably wrong though as medical stuff goes right over my head.

  • #235
Now a study on those with a cognitive impairment. Good grief.

  • #236
N: Menthadology is a self report survey?

D: Yes. In other words, it's not verified.

@barrybateman · 53s

#OscarTrial Nel questions American stats referred to - most disabled victims of crime suffer cognitive and visually impaired. BB

  • #238
Derman says Nel is wrong in his interpretation - for all studies combined there was a 31% increase in attack.

:deadhorse:

  • #239
I mean, with or without data, it's intuitive that disabled persons are, as a group, more vulnerable as potential crime victims than non-disabled persons.

  • #240
Nel: We're in a court of law and we're dealing with relevance
