For the *first time* in this trial, we finally get to hear a little about what Reeva Steenkamp was like, via her cousin. Deeply moving.

Barry and June Steenkamp are two of the most honorable, decent, kind people I've ever read about/seen during my years of following cases & trials here on WS. As far as I'm concerned, anyone would be blessed to count them as friends. I wish I knew them personally.

Throughout this whole terrible ordeal, I've wished I could hug them and tell them how heartbroken I am for them.

N: And Reeva at school?

KM: She was very good. Very meticulous. She got that from her parents......went on to study law. She got a bursary.

finding this hard to find relevant, why is this aggravating re: sentence?

by this i mean, if the person shot behind the door had not been hard working etc etc... with a hard working family... had no prospects... would that mean the killer would deserve a lesser sentence.

Kim Martin is doing a good job of humanising first the family and circumstances of June and Barry, their struggles to make their horse business work. Barry is characterised as wonderful and generous but so committed to feeding the animals and running a difficult and uncertain business that they had financial problems.

June works helping Barry and also tried to do small separate projects to make money.

Reeva, to Kim Martin, was a determined hardworking student. Diligent.

Martin talks about her "emtionally abusive" relationship with Wayne, a previous boyfriend.

N: About boyfriends?

KM: After school because Auntie June was very strict...she got into a relationship with someone called Wayne that was very, very abusive. I didn't hear about it at the time as lived away.....confided in me after just how abusive it was,

I see your point re would it matter who the person was but the life of the victim is as relevant to me as the pages and pages of every charitable act Pistorius has ever performed. And it's also the first time we've heard ANYTHING about her as compared to endless testimony about Pistorius. surely you don't begrude them at least a day?

You're right, but the Steenkamps have been on trial by the public also, by the supporters of Oscar. They've been called greedy, money grabbers and more. True story.

Talking of Reeva's accident now, months in traction where she had to be turned every day.

KM: She made a conscious decision during all those mnths she would continue law but pursue the modelling...life can be short

Explains she wanted to make money to care for her parents. Moved to Joburg for opportunities and to get away from boyfriend.

KM: The first job she got was fashion TV. Hostess, public relations....I know she was very happy during that time.

Martin paraphrased: Reeva, her whole life was about working hard, Barry her father pushed her to get her law degreee, to take care of herself. Her injury where she was paralysed was a life changing experience.

She saw modelling as a way to make more money, as well as having the back-up with her her law degree. Changes from perspective from her serious injury lead her to see life as precious and able to alter at any moment.

She was dedicated to her parents and was focused on making enough to support the her parents. Family was very important to Reeva. Family was everything.

Steenkamp's opportunities all came together when she moved, her first modelling job was fashion TV. She was hosting the television show and in PR, she was happy in that position. Martin thinks she was also very happy in this period, she was doing something very fun, having a bit of fun and earning a good salary.

June looks very close to tears.

Reeva had never missed a Christmas at home.

KM: When she stayed with me she asked, why didn't I go to my mom's for tea everday.....Reeva was a very loves person and she loved her family very much.

  • #419
KM: I know Reeva helped them (family) out....helped them with medical aid when it ran out, paid for it to be reinstated.

  • #420
KM: We met up....she mentioned there might be opp for a photo shoot in Cape town and we begged her to stay with us...started as week, then it turned into two weeks...

Reeva then began travelling back regularly. Didn't like Joburg, 'Cut throat' and she knew her relationship with Warren coming to an end.
