Pistorius 'banned from 2016 Rio Paralympics'

NBC reports that the International Paralympic Committee has said it would not allow Pistorius to compete in Brazil in September 2016.

Maybe Nel can appeal the minimum part of the sentence? All the news sites saying "Pistorius jailed for 5 years", but if, in reality, it's only likely to be 10 months, it's not really a sentence at all. It's only 3 months longer than the trial took.

If the state is not going to appeal...I'm sorry to say that I can't help but think that they are all in it together..

His career in top class athletics was already almost over.
It's the sponsorship deals and "charity ambassador" role that will be lost. BUT you can bet your life that his agent Van Zyl will already be on the phone with publishers and looking at opportunities that flow from Plan B.

is that Dr Phil's phone ringing now?

and also from the Guardian. apologies if already posted but things have been moving fast:

Speaking on Sky News, Nathi Mncube of the National Prosecuting Authority, says the state team is “busy studying the case law” to see if it can appeal.

This is not what we were hoping to achieve by the end of this trial … But it is not entirely up to us.

We accept that at some point somebody has to make a decision and we respect the decision the judge has made.

An “appetite” to appeal is not enough, he says: they must meet legal requirements for an appeal

He says the prosecutors “find solace” in the custodial sentence handed down.

People might not be happy with the outcome but at the end of the day that’s what justice is all about.

That may all be true but I'd have to call this one a convenient justice.

Why?

If they couldn't ban him before sentencing, on what basis can they do it, now?

He'll unfortunately still get a book deal. Do SA have the same laws regarding criminals not profitting from their crime?

It does make you wonder, doesn't it .. that thing with 'doing a deal' re. the phone Carl wiped, I find absolutely astonishing!

I am surprised he's allowed a cell phone while incarcerated.......thought cell phones were considered verboten

I think they just wanted to leave the announcement until the whole trial was over, probably.

So, OP reunion with Schulz, Batchelor and the boys in 10 months? Defence may appeal to extend sentence.

EXACTLY, OZe! It's not prison OP has to worry about - SA Correctional Services will no doubt guard their #1 Star Inmate like a crown jewel.

And I have no doubt that Schultz, Batchelor & Co. have all the patience in the world . . .

I almost sorta feel sorry for OP - prison is gonna be the easy part.

No prison can protect him on the outside.

But hey, when you make enemies and murder people (especially in SA?) there will be consequences.

I don't think that JM wanted to give him a custodial sentence at all. She responded to public feeling and as she said herself went for 'balance', sending him to prison for a token period of time. The way the system works he will not be in prison long enough to have all the wonderful therapy she was so keen on. I hope the NPA do appeal, on JM's own reasoning and the cases she used for precedents, it should have been Dolus Eventualis. MOO

I agree, if there had not been a backlash she must have been thinking suspended sentence. This way, with her not stipulating a threshold of when he can apply for parole he gets out in 10 months and out after good behaviour.

So she thinks she has taken a middle path and compromised. It's not placated anyone. Don't believe Steenkamps will be truly satisfied when it sinks in. Of course Roux et al will be popping corks.
