12/20/21 Update: Wootton has entered a guilty plea to neglect of a dependent resulting in death, but he still faces a murder charge in the case. Wootton plead guilty Monday in Madison Circuit Court Division 1 to the Level 1 felony charge in the 2019 death of 23-month-old Ryder. Defense attorney Mark Nicholson said there is no plea agreement with the State on any charges & that Wootton wants to plead guilty to the neglect charge & 2 misdemeanor charges of possession of marijuana & possession of paraphernalia. Circuit Court 1 Judge Angela Warner Sims set sentencing on the guilty pleas for 2/18/22. In a Nov. 30 email, Deputy Prosecutor Jesse Miller said Wootton could plead guilty to any of the charges, but there is no plea offer on the murder charge. "My client can't plead guilty to murder for something he didn't do," Nicholson said Monday. He said he hoped that by pleading guilty to the neglect of a dependent, the State would dismiss the murder charge. "There is no offer from the state," Judge Sims reiterated. She has not set a trial date for Wootton on the murder charge. Pre-Sentence Investigation Report ordered & shall be filed on or before 2/11/22. Sentencing for Counts I, IV & V are set for 2/18/22 at 1pm. A telephonic attorney conference is scheduled for 1/31/22 at 1pm.
1/31/22 Update: Matter came before the Court scheduled for attorney conference. State appears by Deputy Prosecutor Jesse Miller in person, defense counsel appears by Mark Nicholson via video conference. State requests a 1-week continuance to formally file a notice with the Court if they intend to either proceed or dismiss remaining counts. 1/14/22 Update: Sasser Jr. listened via video call as the mother of James Alex gave a victim’s statement during what was meant to be Sasser Jr.’s sentencing hearing at the Law & Justice Center on 1/14/22. Sasser Jr.’s sentencing was postponed because he tested positive for COVID-19 the day before & could not be physically present for the hearing. Because Davis was already enroute to Bozeman, Judge Brown began the sentencing hearing Friday morning & sent the court into recess after Davis testified. The court is scheduled to reconvene for the remainder of the sentencing hearing on 2/15/22 at 9am.
3/4/22 Update: James Sasser Jr. was sentenced to 100 years for the count on deliberate homicide on 3/4/22 Friday afternoon by Judge John Brown. He was also sentenced to 10 years for the charge of criminal child endangerment & 10 years for tampering with evidence.
*Patricia “Trish” Lynn Batts (48/now 50) – last was pretrial hearing on 6/11/21. Jury selection on 5/31/22 & trial to begin on 6/1/22.
*James Danny Sasser III (14/now 16) - 10/29/20: Judge Brown handed down a sentence that requires the teen to be detained at a juvenile detention facility until he turns 18. After his release, he will be on probation until he turns 25. The 15-year-old will not be registered as a violent offender.
*Gage Anthony Roush (18/now 20) - 11/18/20: Per peal deal Roush was given a 5 year deferred sentence for assaulting James.
*Madison Sasser (18/now 20) - 1/29/21: Per plea agreement Madison was sentenced to youth probation with the Montana Dept. of Corrections until she turns 21. After that she’ll be on adult probation until she turns 25. As part of a plea deal, prosecutors dropped the felony negligent homicide charge against her.

9/30/21 Update: Next pretrial hearing on 10/20/21. 2/19/22 Update: The murder trial of Tellis has been delayed due to his attorneys' attempt to discredit a key piece of evidence in the case. 1/25/22 Update: During online meetings Tuesday 1/25/22, Dickson County Circuit Court Judge David Wolfe said the trial needed to be delayed – but he didn’t extend the start date much longer. District Attorney Ray Crouch said during the Zoom meeting that the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation probe into the death was nearly complete & the autopsy would be finished by March. Wolfe set her trial date for March 16. Another reason behind the postponement is the prosecutor's health. District Attorney Ray Crouch has COVID-19. He told the judge he is symptomatic, sick & in quarantine. He wouldn't be ready to prosecute if the trial began this Tuesday. The new trial date is 3/16/22.

Plead not guilty. Held without bond.
San Mateo County Sheriff’s office forensic labs created a DNA profile used CODIS & was tentatively linked to Bacom.

Jurors started deliberations at ~9:15am. 10:00am: The jury has sent the judge a note asking for a PowerPoint presentation from closing arguments. Lawyers are being asked what they think about it. Judge Miller says the PowerPoint they're looking for cannot be submitted to the jury, because they are just demonstrative. Previous charges: 1/13/20: Assault with bodily injury was dismissed as a material witness was missing. Plead guilty to filing a false police report & was sentenced to 6 months on the false report, but it only shows a credit for time served of 132 days - just over 4 months.

3/17/22 Update: Valorie: Sentencing entry re: Prison sentencing entry. Defendant came with counsel. The court finds that on 2/24/22 defendant unpon plea of not guilty has been found guilty by an impaneled jury & convicted of the following charges. Count 4: Involuntary manslaughter & count 7: endangering children. The parties stipulated & court finds the offenses under counts 4 & 7 are allied offenses of similar import & count 7 should be & is merged into count 4 & defendant shall be sentenced under count 4. In addition the State has elected to have defendant sentenced under count 4 of the indictment. It is ordered that for conviction of offense the defendant will serve a minimum term of 11 years & a maximum term of 16 ½ years in prison, of which zero years is a mandatory term. Jail credit of 38 days is granted prior to this date of sentencing. Defendant will be subject to post release control. Defendant is ordered conveyed to the custody of the Ohio Reformatory for Women in Marysville, Oh. Bond terminated.
