Updated12 minutes ago
6 victims found dead inside local high school, police say[…]
"This was a rapidly evolving and dynamic situation, and the swift co-operation from the school, first responders, and the community played a critical role in our response,” North District Chief Supt. Ken Floyd wrote in a statement.[…]

RCMP have confirmed that 10 people are dead after a shooting in Tumbler Ridge, B.C. Six people were found dead inside the high school, and police say another person died on the way to hospital.

Two more people were found dead at a residence that police believe is connected to the incident.

The shooter was confirmed dead earlier this afternoon. Police said the suspect was found dead inside the school from what they described as a "self-inflicted injury."

Two people were airlifted to hospital with serious or life-threatening injuries. Another 25 people are being assessed for injuries at the local medical centre, police said. ”

“Retired RCMP major crimes investigator Bruce Pitt-Payne says he believes police will take what they learned from the 2020 mass shooting in Portapique, N.S., that left 22 people dead, and apply it to this situation.

He said it's not unusual that police aren't releasing much information about the situation or any potential casualties at this point. “

I live in N.S. and was here during the 2020 attacks. You’re strong, B.C. We’ll get through this together.

There is a hospital literally right next door to the school, but it looks more like another school building than most people's ideas of a hospital.

The Nova Scotia thing was a LOT different, because it had multiple sites over a couple of days, and they weren't sure at first who was doing it. That was definitely one of the strangest mass crimes I've ever heard of.

Full RCMP statement:

“On February 10, at approximately 1:20 p.m., Tumbler Ridge RCMPreceived a report of an active shooter at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School. A Police Initiated Public Alert (PIPA) was issued as officers responded to the scene. The alert was officially cancelled at 5:45 p.m. as police do not believe there are any outstanding suspects or ongoing threat to the public.

As part of the initial response to the active shooting, police entered the school to locate the threat. During the search, officers located multiple victims. An individual believed to be the shooter was also found deceased with what appears to be a self‑inflicted injury.

Six additional individuals, not including the suspect, have been located deceased inside the school. Two victims have been airlifted to hospital with serious or life‑threatening injuries. A third victim died while being transported to hospital. Approximately 25 others are being assessed and triaged at the local medical centre for non‑life‑threatening injuries.

All remaining students and staff were safely evacuated. Police are working closely with the school district to support a coordinated reunification process for families.

As part of the ongoing investigation, police have identified a secondary location believed to be connected to the incident, where two additional victims were located deceased in a residence. Officers are conducting further searches of additional homes and properties to determine whether anyone else may be injured or otherwise linked to today’s events.

Additional RCMP resources continue to be deployed into the community to support the response and investigation. These include but are not limited to Frontline officers, the Emergency Response Team, BC RCMP Major Crime, and Victim Services.

BC RCMP Major Crime has assumed conduct of the investigation and is working to determine the full circumstances surrounding this incident.

“This was a rapidly evolving and dynamic situation, and the swift cooperation from the school, first responders, and the community played a critical role in our response,” says Superintendent Ken Floyd, North District Commander. “Our thoughts are with the families, loved ones, and all those impacted by this tragic incident. This has been an incredibly difficult and emotional day for our community, and we are grateful for the cooperation shown as officers continue their work to advance the investigation.”

Further updates will be provided as information becomes available.”

I did not see this massacre in the news. That is terrible.

This is one of Canada's deadliest mass killing and school shooting. It is the deadliest school shooting since Montreal École Polytechnique Massacre in 1989.

We have breaking news in the Nancy Guthrie case. I have a feeling that, since it's in another country, it will not take precedence, unless more information comes in.

Is this town so small that the victims are likely related in some way? I recall another CAN shooting with family members involved but not a school shooting.

Active shooter alert at 1:20 pm, fairly late in the school day IMO. Per wikipedia, the Tumbler Ridge Secondary school goes from grade 7 to grade 12 and has approximately 165 students. So small. The perpetrator was found dead at the school along with 6 other deceased (LE hasn't identified if the victims were students or teachers) and at least 27 injured when LE arrived. Another victim died on their way to the hospital, bringing the death toll to 7. From what LE is saying, police went to a residence "connected to the incident" and discovered 2 more dead, meaning 9 murdered today. This is a town of 2400 people. I was following locally before they announced how many people died. This is horrid. Devastated for this community. On my local tv they have referred to the perpetrator as being a woman but I cannot find an online source. Heartbroken.

Superintendent Ken Floyd of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police confirmed the shooter was the suspect described in a police alert to the community earlier in the day. The alert described the suspect as a “female in a dress with brown hair.”

Is this just a coincidence? Are kids on the internet talking about shooting up their schools? Copycat? I live in Winnipeg, and these threats have been in the news here.

I thought the same as you. There seems to be something in the air or in the internet waves. JMO.

Following from Alberta. For Canadians, school shootings are far less common than in the US, and so shocking. My heart goes out to the families, to this small community, and to first responders dealing with this horror.

''TUMBLER RIDGE, BRITISH COLUMBIA — RCMP say eight people, including the female suspect, are dead after a shooting at a school in Tumbler Ridge, B.C., while two more bodies were found at a home believed to be connected to the incident.

RCMP North District Commander Supt. Ken Floyd said police are “not in a place” to understand why the shootings took place at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School and a residence in the community in B.C.’s Peace region, and he can’t give the ages of the victims.

Floyd said more than 25 people were hurt at the school, including two with life-threatening injuries, while an alert for residents to shelter in place was lifted after police determined there were no other suspects.''

''Police provide update after 10 people, including shooter, killed in Tumbler Ridge, B.C.''

I follow a Springfield, Ohio page on Facebook, and have ever since the unfounded allegations about Haitian residents stealing and eating pets. Their schools have been on lockdown over the past couple of days, due to repeated bomb threats.

If the Canadian shooter was female, that's going to be quite unusual.
