Prominent Saudi Arabian journalist and Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi mysteriously vanished earlier this week and has not been heard from since Tuesday, according to the Post.

Khashoggi was last seen entering the Saudi Arabian consulate in Istanbul to obtain documents for his upcoming wedding, his fiancée told the Post. Saudi Arabia denied detaining him.

But on Wednesday, as Khashoggi’s lengthening absence raised fears that he is being held incommunicado, Turkey’s Foreign Ministry summoned the Saudi ambassador to discuss the whereabouts of the journalist, who is well-known for criticizing the Saudi leadership.

“It would be unfair and outrageous if he has been detained for his work as a journalist and commentator,” The Post said in a statement. “We hope that he is safe and that we can hear from him soon.”

The State Department has also requested information about Khashoggi’s disappearance.

Turkey concludes Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi killed by ‘murder’ team, sources say

ISTANBUL — Turkey has concluded that Jamal Khashoggi, a prominent journalist from Saudi Arabia, was killed in the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul earlier this week by a Saudi team sent “specifically for the murder,” two people with knowledge of the probe said Saturday.

Turkish investigators believe a 15-member team “came from Saudi Arabia. It was a preplanned murder,” said one of the people. Both spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the ongoing investigation.

They offered no specific evidence to back up the account. Earlier Saturday, however, Turkey’s Anadolu news agency said the Istanbul public prosecutor’s office had opened a probe into Khashoggi’s disappearance. Turkish authorities have said that Khashoggi never left the consulate.

Saudi Arabia had vehemently denied that Khashoggi, who also contributed to The Washington Post’s Global Opinions section, was detained after he entered the mission.​

One Turkish official told The Associated Press earlier Saturday night: “The initial assessment of the Turkish police is that Mr. Khashoggi has been killed at the consulate of Saudi Arabia in Istanbul. We believe that the murder was premeditated and the body was subsequently moved out of the consulate.”

The explosive allegations could upend already-fraught relations between Saudi Arabia and Turkey, as well as raise new questions about the kingdom and the actions of its assertive Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, whom Khashoggi wrote about in columns for The Washington Post and others.

“If the reports of Jamal’s murder are true, it is a monstrous and unfathomable act,” the Post’s editorial page editor Fred Hiatt said in a statement. “Jamal was — or, as we hope, is — a committed, courageous journalist. He writes out of a sense of love for his country and deep faith in human dignity and freedom.”

The 59-year-old Khashoggi went missing Tuesday while on a visit to the consulate for paperwork to marry his Turkish fiance.

As a general rule, I don't believe anything that comes out of Turkey, and SA only has a tiny bit more credibility, IMO.

I assume yes. Is sounds to me like Khashoggi is still missing — he hasn’t been located, living or dead. Turkey claims he was murdered at the consulate. Saudi officials deny he’s dead.

It’s a mystery.

IDK. Between these 2 its a total tossup IMO. But his fiance waited outside for 11 hrs and didn't see or hear anything? No cars in and out? I give her credit for staying to bear witness!

State Department officials have said only that the United States cannot confirm Mr. Khashoggi’s fate but that it is following the case.

Shortly before the Tuesday appointment, Turkish officials now say, 15 Saudi agents, some carrying diplomatic passports, arrived in Istanbul on two planes.

On Tuesday, Mr. Khashoggi and Ms. Cengiz went to the embassy at 1:30 p.m. She waited outside for him.
