Quanell X Stages Rally in Cleveland

CLEVELAND, Texas - Racial divisions have surfaced in the town of Cleveland, 40 miles north of Houston, ever since last Thanksgiving's alleged gang rape of an 11-year old Hispanic girl.

Most of the 17 suspects accused of sexually assaulting the preteen girl are black. And on Thursday night, community activist Quanell X hosted a rally there.

With some of the defendants' parents standing next to him on stage, the activist took up a collection for their legal expenses from the largely African-American crowd

I am more than a little concerned that the outrageous statement by the defense attorney validating that the men/boys knew the child's age might be some sort of a legal ploy.

What on earth could this attorney have hoped to accomplish by such a statement? For one thing, he's assured the fact that the accused will be permitted a Post Conviction Relief Trial down the road (a civil suit paid for by the taxpayers against the attorney for failure to represent appropriately). It sounds as if the accused would have a case, too. As I can attest, that will just bring the victim more grief. We're talking 10-15 years of legal wrangling over this case for this girl. That casts a pall over a child and a family.

Every single time one of the males goes to court or has a hearing or an appeal, her life will be negatively impacted.

I don't know but I wonder. If there is any evidence that they knew, or if he feels that the jury might believe they knew then he may be trying to get that shocker out in the open now, rather than a big shock and impact during trial. By getting it out now, it will be talked about, and have less of an impact during trial.

Or it could be that maybe others knew, but his client didn't know? Remember he only represents one. So he could be trying to throw the blame on others so his client won't look so bad.

I hate to say it cause as a WSer, I don't like gag orders - but in this case with things as volitile as they are I hope the prosecution wins their motion.

Stephen C. Taylor, the only other attorney representing the suspects who could be reached, declined comment on the interview.

He noted that everyone might soon be silenced in the criminal case, as the prosecutors have filed a motion for a gag order that is slated for a hearing Tuesday.

http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/metropolitan/7468724.html

I'm afraid I don't think the gag order is going to help by now. IMO most of the inflamatory info is already out there. And the gag order mainly just applies to the attorneys and the court and LE. And most of them weren't talking much anyway. Does anyone know if the gag order is effective against the parents of the accused?

But I do know that it won't affect the gossip that goes around, the activists, and the rabble rousers. And those won't quit just because there is a gag order.

Here is everything you need to know about Quannel X:

He was kicked out of the Nation of Islam for being too radical and too racist.
That takes a lot.

From wiki:

Quanell X was forced out of the Nation of Islam for publicly inciting violence with his televised, and highly publicized, exhortation to Houston-area blacks:
"f you feel that you just got to mug somebody because of your hurt and your pain, go to River Oaks and mug you some good white folks. If you’re angry that our brother is put to death, don’t burn down your own community, give these white folks hell from the womb to the tomb."[6]
After leaving the Nation of Islam, Quanell X joined a paramilitary group named "MFOI", for "Mental Freedom Obtains Independence." The new faction was not designed to attract significant exoteric membership.[7] After the MFOI removed Quanell, he joined the New Black Panther Party under the leadership of Khalid Abdul Muhammad and is now a local leader of the organization.[3]

It makes me wonder about the racial status of the town before the crime. I read somewhere that a local pastor was the one who invited this activist. Learning the activists reputation now makes me wonder about the motivations of the pastor. Was he looking to tear the town apart? Was he just waiting on an excuse to start a racial war? And he is allegedly a pastor?

Quanell X to the parents of the young men charged "Don't you walk away and let them take plea deals for some trumped up charges!"

He also referred to LE as KKK.

(sitting on hands again)

Trumped up charges???? Someone should show him the video, along with a reminder of the girl's age.

He can disagree with the circumstances, he can argue to change the law, but lol saying the charges are trumped up just goes to show he doesn't feel he has any ammunition.

And how exactly are these defendants 'victims' of racial inequality? They willingly raped an 11 yr old girl. Even if they believed her to be 15 or 16, they would still be guilty of participating in a gang rape.
I read somewhere 'else', that this girl was only 4ft7 and barely 95 lbs. So even if she was fully 'developed'---she still would not have looked 18. imo

some of the articles linked throughout this link are from more local newsources and the comments sections locals and former locals discuss that there is some tension existing already, plus something going on about trying to unseat sitting council members, not sure what the background of that is but it is possible that some of the tensions arise out of that. Might be interesting to try to do some reading up on THAT situation to get a better feel for where this town was at in that regard when this case broke.

Some other former locals brought up some sort of local scandal in which a sexual assault (not on an 11yr old) some years back in which some folks seemed to think justice was NOT done. I am betting there has been a lot simmering for a while in this little town and this case and Mr. X come at a very very volitile time.

:shakehead: I really hope some cooler heads will prevail. Now there is the hispanic lady/advocate coming into the picture and making her statements (which I can't say I disagree with). But still, her appearance on teh scene worrys me as well, this place feels like a tinderbox and the whole nation is watching. I see things getting really ugly in Cleveland. I hope that is not so.

I wonder what race the victim was in that case?

I agree with what the lady advocate said, and I believe she even said it pretty diplomatically. But it looks like it is shaping up to be triangle.....

Black vs Hispanic vs legal system. Not to mention some other outsiders probably coming in to help stir things up. There will be a riot at some point if they don't get some calmer heads in there who are able to speak out. It would help if some of the news agencies and community leaders would start talking about how this isn't an us vs them situation.

I agree.

THere is indeed an ugly triad shaping up. Very frightening. The law and justice get derailed, and something really bad happens, unless someone gets this town to remember that this is about the law and the rules of society, not race.

ETA misunderstood your question about victim. You were asking about last case mentioned by commenters. IDK, but that would be interesting to add to the portriat of the town.

I agree.

I believe the victim has been confirmed by media reports to be hispanic. It may even be mentioned in the article. THere is indeed an ugly triad shaping up. Very frightening. ETA link victim confirmed hispanic. http://www2.myfoxhouston.com/dpp/news/local/110310-quanell-x-stages-rally-in-cleveland

LOL I meant the victim from some years back that the locals weren't happy with the outcome. If she happened to be black, that could have a major affect on the attitudes now.
