TX - Active shooter at Allen Shopping Mall, multiple victims, 6 May 2023

  • #101
I’ve seen descriptions of the shooter but not a name, this happened an hour from where I live. I have many family members who live closer- we are all checking in with each other- I’m sick waiting on some
Prayers for the families, survivors and community.
Talk of gun laws will come, but not today

<modsnip - if you can't link it (not post it, link it you can't discuss it here) No other info has come out. I doubt the car he was driving was registered to him. Which means they had to find the owners of the car, find out who was driving it if they weren’t, and find out any info they can glean from people who knew him. Once they can get a full picture they will release the info. It’s still chaos for them I imagine.

I've seen the same sickening photo, and the tattoo on his hand. No idea what it means.

Mass killings are happening with staggering frequency in the United States this year: an average of about one a week, according to a database maintained by The Associated Press and USA Today in partnership with Northeastern University.

The article said that was the age range of the injured being treated at a specific medical center...that's all I got before the paywall popped up.

Apologies, injured victims

NYTimes

Seven people, including the gunman, were pronounced dead at the mall. Officials could account for at least nine people who were transported to hospitals, but more victims may have been taken in private vehicles, the Allen fire chief, Jonathan Boyd, said. Two of those died later. Three were in critical condition and four in stable condition.

It appears that the shooter exited his vehicle near the mall entrance, immediately began shooting people on the sidewalk outside the mall, then proceeded inside and continued shooting inside. Then, an officer who was inside the mall on an unrelated issue, shot and killed the shooter. MY OPINION from reading and viewing news accounts.

Thank you to those who warned about the photos and videos circulating online. I have made sure not to watch. I don't want to see tinies injured and killed. The whole thing is sick. I'm extra sad for all of you who reside in TX...this is too close to home for you. :(

Yes, that's right.

A spokesman for Medical City Healthcare, which was treating several victims at three trauma facilities, said the ages of the injured ranged from 5 to 61.

Also from the NYT article:

Representative Keith Self, a Republican who represents Allen, Texas, said on CNN that critics who are calling for more than “thoughts and prayers” after Saturday’s shooting “don’t believe in almighty God, who is absolutely in control of our lives.” Instead, he said, the country’s lack of “mental health institutions” is to blame.

“Really I would like to stay away from the politics today because I want to focus on the victims, today we should be focused on the families,” he said. “Prayers are important and they are important in the families that are devastated right now.”

In a statement, Kris Brown, the president of Brady, the gun violence prevention organization, noted the long list of shootings in a short week.

“A house, a doctors’ office, and now a mall,” he said. “These horrific tragedies are occurring with increasing regularity and it’s clear there’s no place in this country where Americans are safe from gun violence. But this will continue to be our reality unless and until the U.S. changes its relationship with guns and our lawmakers finally answer to the American people, not the gun lobby.”

Wow! Kudos to the officer who responded, on a day off, and stopped the shooter from killing more victims. Pretty amazing.

Yes that is what I’ve read. At first they thought there was a driver to his car- but then a witness said he came out of the car from drivers seat

The city of Allen has their own police department. They are not Dallas PD.
That press conference was shameful. They refused to call it a shooting or say the word gun. Seven hours after the shooting they definitely knew an assault rifle was used to murder a bunch of people. Again. They just told us prayer will heal us. I am so sick of this. I live in Texas and it is a hellscape these days. Anyone can have a gun pretty much anywhere now, no permit, no questions, and the response to the daily mass shootings we seem to have is more prayer and more guns. I’m fed up.

My post was just meant to say I didn't think LE was covering anything up (specifically, that Allen PD had done anything wrong).

<modsnip - general gun discussion belongs on the gun discussion thread>

The cop came to the mall on another issue. I’ve not heard if it was a he, or that the cop was armed and off duty.

omg. No, the solution is not to increase mental health facilities. Everyone with half a brain smells that red herring.

Yep, a true hero. Just a twist of fate and his own family could be mourning HIM. Or HER.

The US gun laws/restrictions... that's another issue that prayers and condolences cannot even begin to touch... and sadly seem just hollow words. jmo
Oh yes—I agree. Sorry, I didn’t mean to sound snippy with you at all! Just fed up with the whole situation.

The perp is known

"The FBI and police have raided the dead suspect's home following the civilian massacre. Neighbors say they always saw him wearing a security guard-type uniform, but he was 'very quiet' and had 'very unusual behavior.' "

I posted the CNN link last night, an interview with a local Texas "educator" is the term they used to describe her current occupation. She is ex FBI. She suggested 2 things that she always does when she goes shopping.

1. Make it a practice to never have the door at your back. Always shop with this in mind, where you can see the door

2. She never uses her cell phone between the exit of the mall or store and her parking spot.. ie until she gets to her vehicle. Stay aware, don't be distracted.

Witnesses

Witnesses have recalled the horrific moments they realized they were in the midst of a mass shooting - with one man, Steven Spainhouer, saying he rushed to desperately save a child who had been shot.

His own son was working at the H&M store when shots were fired.

Spainhouer told CBS News: 'I never imagined in 100 years I would be thrust into the position of being the first first responder on the site to take care of people.

'The first girl I walked up to was crouched down covering her head in the bushes, so I felt for a pulse, pulled her head to the side and she had no face.'

He said she was already beyond saving.

Still set on saving the mess of victims, Spainhouer recalled how he then found another child, who survived the barrage of bullets by being covered by his protective mother, who he said was among eight to die by the gunman.

Spainhouer added: 'When I rolled the mother over, he came out.

Dashcam video circulating online showed the gunman getting out of a car and shooting at people on the sidewalk. More than three dozen shots could be heard as the vehicle that was recording the video drove off.

Allen Fire Chief Jonathan Boyd said seven people, including the shooter, died at the scene. Nine victims were taken to hospitals. Two of them died.

Three of the wounded were in critical condition Saturday evening, and four were stable, Boyd said.

An Allen Police Department officer was in the area on an unrelated call when he heard shots at 3:36 p.m., the department wrote on Facebook. bbm
*so, nine are dead in total?
