YES Prep Southwest school shooting: 1 suspect in custody at southwest Houston campus

So far it seems that it is the one shooter who is in custody, and an administrator who was injured in the shooting. But there is this quote from a student:
When I was coming out, I saw blood and glass shattering everywhere," one 7th grader said. "My teachers told me to stay back in the classroom where nobody can see you and officers came, saying 'Put your hands up. Go outside.'"

And this statement issued by the school:
Police are on campus with a suspect in custody who opened fire inside the school. No students have been injured. Students have been transported to W. Fuqua and Hiram Clarke, where they can be picked up. Please do not drive to the school; roads are blocked by Houston Police Department. We are gathering information and will pass along as soon as we can.

I pray there are no further assailants or victims.

Multiple agencies responded to the scene within minutes. Once inside, officers located the gunman, who was armed with a rifle. The man surrendered without incident, Houston Police Chief Finner said during a news conference Friday afternoon.

YES Prep Southwest Academy Shooting: What we know about the principal injured
Eric Espinoza, the principal at YES Prep, was confirmed by the school and the administrator who was injured during the shooting.

“Principal Eric Espinoza was taken to the hospital after a bullet grazed him from behind, and he is expected to be released [Friday],” YES Prep wrote in a letter to parents and released to KPRC 2.

Answered prayers!

‘This was terrifying’: Parents, students reunite after shooting at YES Prep

We are so fortunate that this ended the way it did. Many students are traumatized of course, and will have nightmares no doubt. But to come away from a school shooting without a loss of life is miraculous, and I am so grateful. When I heard the first breaking news, I felt the same pit in my stomach when the initial reports came about the Santa Fe shooting. Being a teacher, and living in Houston, it reminds me how vulnerable we all are. And learning and practicing active shooter drills with your students is as sobering as can be.
