The accused, Marvin Rex Lake allegedly gripped, 1-year-old Ahren DeHart, like a football and dropped him on the frame of a futon, causing fatal injuries, a police affidavit stated.

The 24-year-old was arrested Monday for murdering the infant who the El Paso County Medical Examiner’s Office declared died of intentional trauma/homicide.

Lake, a friend of the infant’s family, was a last-minute resort for babysitting the victim and two other children on April 12 while their mothers went to work, the document states.

He made two video calls on that day with a listed witness in the case. In the first call, the infant seemed to be in good health, the affidavit states.

In the second video call., Lake told the witness that the infant was vomiting a red substance and which he wasn’t sure was blood. He had also "rag-dolled," the affidavit states.

He also told police he grabbed the infant like a football after he became upset and couldn't control his anger as the infant was acting fussy.

Lake was booked into the El Paso County Detention Facility on a capital murder charge. He remains incarcerated.

He is a former military member who was discharged from service more than a year ago.

According to a * page set up by the victim’s family, Ahren’s father is a soldier stationed at Fort Bliss and his mother is a healthcare worker at a local hospital.

An investigator with the El Paso Police Department says Lake drove himself to the police headquarters in Central El Paso and initially denied causing the infant’s injuries. Police pressed Lake with images of the injuries to the infant, but he continued to say he did not know how the injuries occurred, according to the affidavit.

Lake began to change his story, the document reads. He said he performed several wrestling-style moves with the child and, at one point, the child slipped from his hand and struck the frame of a futon in the residence.

The witness and DeHart’s mother went back to the residence where they found the infant unresponsive and not breathing properly. The two called 911 and the baby was transported to the El Paso Children’s Hospital.

At the hospital, doctor’s disclosed the child had suffered several acute injuries, including brain damage. The injuries also included skull fractures, lung hemorrhaging, suspected abdominal injuries and bruises on the infant’s chin and lower body.

El Paso police say the two other children were also found with injuries and their conditions are being investigated.

Substitute sitter could have just called somebody and said he couldn't hack three kids. Walk into another room. Could have asked that witness for help.

Ahren will be remembered as a "beautiful and loving boy who was always smiling," said Ahren's granduncle, Lawrence DeHart.

"He was very, very loved," DeHart said. "His parents, their lives really revolved around him. For 20-year-olds, it's clear that they were destined to be parents. They loved him to death. Words can't express how devastating this whole thing is for us. I can't imagine what they (parents) are going through.

They're just grieving, and this is about the most devastating of a fashion as you can imagine," DeHart said. "What they've had to go through that people don't see or understand — holding your baby in the NICU (neonatal intensive care unit) while he takes his last breaths is horrific. It all brought tears to our eyes and we cried deep. You carry these types of wounds with you for life."

So, they knew him and he was watching his stepkids at home and he was just going to watch baby Ahren for one day for like five hours. On April 15th Lake went to LE to seek reimbursement for the futon! WTH?

Staggering Ahren's dad served with Lake and the mom's worked together. He had to have a way better reason for horrifically murdering this baby than him "ripping a pillow".

My heart hurts for your friend. No way can I understand that pain. However, my heart gives for thirteen years for her. You're a good friend.
