Found Deceased TX - Alexis Wartena, 7, autistic, Amarillo, 19 July 2016

  • #41
The preliminary autopsy results revealed cause of death was drowning.

So common for children with autism who wander off :(

The school I am hoping my autistic son gets placed in, has a pool and makes it a very high priority to teach all the students water safety and how to swim for this reason.

Oh ffs. Sometimes, it is just an accident. They are not even from Texas and stuck there because they took their EFFIN KIDS. I hear tx family services are a bag of decks too.
Omg...the poor children also! They have to wait until court on August 2.

This poor family. I am completely speechless.

This is craziness!

I sure hope they have a reason for keeping this family apart.

Some county CPS/DFS whatever will hold the remaining children while the death of another is investigated, this can't be anything but devastating for all surviving family members. It's terrible how often autistic children wander and unknowingly put themselves in harm's way but IMO these parents were not negligent and their family should now ever have been torn apart in this time of grief.

But other family members have tried to take the care of the kids on but they've been blocked.
I can understand the parents temporarily losing custody to other family members while this is investigated, but for the kids to be put in state care seems extreme and unnecessary.

I work for Texas CPS.

This is an out of state family so the state considers them a flight risk. The state cannot just give kids over to another relative without doing background checks and ensuring the home environment is safe. With presumably all out of state family this makes it difficult to do. I do feel it is traumatic but understandable that the state took custody of the other children while they investigate the death. There are so many factors here - was it truly an accident? Where the parents neglectful in their supervision of the child? Do any of the other children show signs of abuse?

The State will be raked over the coals no matter what course it takes when investigating these types of situations. Had they let the children just go with some out of state relative or let them remain with their parents without being able to check them out first they would be liable for if any abuse that occurred. Everyone would have their pitch forks out if it turns out this wasn't accident or there was some gross negligence on the parent's part leading to the child's death. Yes CPS has its faults and failures but if you knew even half of the cases that come through it becomes far more understandable that the State might decide to place safety over well-being at times. It also isn't just some caseworker that felt the children should be taken into foster care - in the state of Texas in order to place children in foster care the State has to petition a Judge. In this case the court ruled that the children should come into foster care. Perhaps we don't have all the facts. Despite what people say - Caseworkers HATE taking children into foster care. It is one of the most traumatic events a caseworker has to experience on a daily or weekly basis.

Quackenbush said the children were released from Child Protective Services Monday afternoon after one of them was injured while in foster care.

-------------

The injured child reportedly had markings around his neck and bruising along his spine.

A CPS spokesman tells us that's because the son had been physically abused at the foster home. The mom says she doesn't know who or why this was done to her son and she says her son won't talk about it. Because of that incident the CPS spokesman says there was no need to keep the kids from their parents.

So because his foster family abused him, that made his biological family safe instantly?! Wtf?

This article is very long and outrageous.

Focus first on finding the child who might be alive. If the parents did it she is dead clearly. So go with the chance of finding her alive first!

Look everywhere she could go quickly. Let the parents who know her best help you. Then when she is found dead or not found you can interrogate the parents. I certainly hope this didn't change the outcome.

I'm even more incensed at this case now. Abused in unnecessary foster care placement so instantly handed back? There is zero logic at work there. Texas CPS has to explain itself fully to this poor family.
