also i want to comment even in way better circumstances, custody exchanges are a powder keg. there was a period of time my husband had to do supervised exchanges (not visits, just exchanges) because his childrens mom would show up w a bunch of ppl cursing and threatening him. he never went alone and recorded every interaction.

Yes - I’ve experienced this myself. They can be terrifying with abusers and you have to do it or you’ll be in violation of a court order.
From the article it sounds like the support worker would take the child into the supervised area.
I wonder if the daughter and her boyfriend were along for moral support maybe?
It also sounds like the perp would have killed his own son. He is a monster.

Powder keg is the right word. You can ask for police escorts I wish more people would.

this was CA, we had to split costs w the mother. it was in a crowded strip mall, we were to park opposite ends and around the corner, in this situation so much potential for collateral damage with that set up.

@MimosaMornings sbm IDK. Not clear to me what was supervised --- entire visit Broderick had w son or only the exchange itself (I am not familiar w the latter).

I feel sorry for parents who have to ask a court impose these strictures on their lives. And the kids too.

I wonder if a psych evaluation was done after last year’s arrest. Maybe something like that could uncover potential for volatile and violent responses to situations like this,

There’s no great answer I don’t think... my ex had a psych evaluation after he tried to kill me in the middle of the night in front of our child, after I filed for divorce, and his lawyer didn’t want it released so it wasn’t. He was charged with several felonies by the State at that point. The judge ordered supervised visits like this exactly regardless and I had a restraining order against him as well. It was a total nightmare. IMO in cases of violent abuse that are documented and even threats of violence supervised visits should be out. They are fine for parents who have struggled with substance abuse or parenting in general with no abuse but not for any abuse as above until that person gets serious help and is truly remorseful or the criminal charges have been dealt with. This keeps happening and it is preventable!!

I fail to understand why after the assault of any child he was still given access to those children with a protection order in place. I feel like the fault of their deaths lies with the Attorney General's office along with the judge that released him from monitoring. Plenty of people are placed on house arrest for less. IMO.

The judge’s comment makes me crazy that after 90 days wearing an ankle bracelet with no problems, it’s standard to take it off
Jeeze, lady. No assaults/murders means it’s working.

According to court documents, Broderick has been indicted with nine counts of sexual assault of a child, all of which happened with one child.

It was Alyssa Broderick’s worst fear: Her stepfather was out of jail and she knew she wasn’t safe.

Then 16, Alyssa told a court that Stephen Broderick had sexually assaulted her, and she pleaded with a judge to keep him away from her and her family. Broderick was out on bond while facing felony charges in the case, which would grow to include allegations of strangulation and years of abuse.

Court documents said her mother took her to a local hospital for a sexual-assault forensic exam. At the hospital she told a nurse that Broderick had assaulted her, and the nurse who administered the exam noted injuries consistent with the teen's allegations, the documents said.

Samples were collected at the time of the examination to determine whether Broderick's DNA was present, the documents said.

She told the police that Broderick had "continuously sexually assaulted" her since she about 10 years old, the documents said.

Broderick was also charged with multiple counts of assault by strangulation by "impeding the normal breathing or circulation of the blood of the said person by applying pressure" to the girl's throat or neck or by blocking her mouth and nose with his hand, the documents said.
