Atatiana Jefferson was shot and killed by a Fort Worth police offer around 2 a.m. on October 12, 2019. She was inside her home and was shot through her bedroom window, according to body cam footage and the medical examiner’s report. The shooting happened just weeks after a Dallas police officer, Amber Guyger, was found guilty of murder after accidentally shooting Botham Jean when she mistook his apartment for her own. Guyger was sentenced to 10 years in prison. Days after her sentencing, a witness in her trial, Joshua Brown, was shot to death in what police said was a drug deal gone bad. The name of the Fort Worth officer who shot Jefferson has not been released. Here is what you need to know.

A jury could well be impaneled today or Friday in the murder trial of former Fort Worth police officer Aaron Dean. Judge George Gallagher divided the original jury pool of almost 200 people Monday into two groups based on their exposure to media coverage of the case. Gallagher has said that he will wait to see how jury selection progresses before making a final ruling on a defense motion for a change of venue, which, if granted, would move the trial out of Tarrant County.

Judge Gallagher just talked to Seychelle Leake, a local racial justice activist, for gesturing to Zion during testimony. He swore her in as a witness and told her to wait in the hallway, and cautioned the gallery not to coach any of the witnesses.

Gill is questioning Zion about the interview he gave right after his aunt was killed. He doesn’t remember the interview, he says. He hasn’t been able to answer Gill’s questions.

The state passes questioning to the defense. Attorney Bob Gill, on Dean’s team, takes over.

Zion’s previous testimony conflicted somewhat with the interview he gave following the shooting — prosecutor Smith said he and the defense will work to square the facts later today

Wow what a joke. Terrible start to this trial.

From the very beginning it is so clear that the circumstances of her murder were outrageous based on poor judgment by the officer. I am so sorry for her nephew. I hope they are able to get justice for Atatiana.

I totally agree. It is outrageous that LE can lurk around a house and the homeowner not be able to take action to defend themselves. Unless you identify yourself as a cop, you are just a trespasser.

Then you must outraged about another Ft Worth resident 73-year-old Jerry Waller who was murdered by inept police in his own garage. The death of Jerry couldn't even get the bumbling cops fired much less a trial. Too bad Lee Merritt is interested in the name of justice for some only.

I am outraged whenever there is an egregious over reach of power. I don't know that case but I can say with fair assurance that if he was wrongly killed in his own home then who ever the actor was should be held to account.

Anyone see tears on Aaron Dean's face during his testimony? I sure didn't. And I can tell you allergies are terrible right now and I am sniffling just like him today, so sniffles aren't surprising.
