GUILTY TX - Atatiana Jefferson, 28, fatally shot at home, Fort Worth, Oct 2019 *officer charged* #2

11 years 10 months 12 days

Jury got it right. Should have been murder and longer, but at least he'll enjoy a nice stretch in TDCJ.

ETA these victim impact statements are hitting it out of the park. Beautiful, impassioned, pained, and to the point. Bless this family, may they find peace and comfort.

Hoping some think this feels like justice, I’m not sure it is enough.

Aaron Dean got more time than Amber Guyger, who was off duty at the time she shot a citizen in his home.

The victim was a citizen in her home, alone with a child, who was concerned about a prowler in her backyard. Aaron Dean never announced himself. Bad police work.

Atatiana, rest in peace dear. I'm sorry for the egregious errors that led to your death in front of your underage nephew. That should never have happened.
Thanks to the jury.

It is interesting the contrast with Amber Guyger. She was convicted of murder rather than manslaughter and got 10 years. Dean was convicted of manslaughter and got ~12 years. Guyger at least seemed repentant. Dean, not so much. The jury in this trial took so long to decide the sentence I would love to have been a fly on the wall to know what they were conflicted about. It seems clear that probation was never on the table.

How did Aaron Dean receive a longer sentence than Amber Guyger despite conviction on a lesser charge

"I felt that Amber Guyger got off easy and it was because, in my opinion, the jury was moved by her shows of contrition," Civil rights attorney Lee Merritt said.
Merritt represents both families of Jean and Jefferson.

First Look: Aaron Dean's New State Prison Mugshot

We're getting our first look at the state prison mugshot for Aaron Dean, the former Fort Worth police officer convicted of manslaughter in the death of Atatiana Jefferson and sentenced to nearly 12 years behind bars.

According to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, Dean is now at the Ramsey Unit in Rosharon, about 35 minutes outside of Houston.

More at link above.

Wow! That close haircut in mug shot image substantially changes his appearance. Wonder if this bad-cop will be in State prison general population or maximum security for his own protection?

Mayor Mattie Parker and District 8 council member Chris Nettles were not held in contempt of court, after they apologized behind closed doors to the judge overseeing the Aaron Dean trial.

Parker and Nettles were called in for the hearing after they released statements following the manslaughter conviction of Dean, in violation of the gag order preventing people involved in the case from speaking about it publicly.

"Amber Carr passed away peacefully this morning. She was surrounded by family and loved ones. We are asking for your continued prayers and support as her two young sons deal with her transition,"

Since Jefferson's death, the family has endured one tragedy after another. Atatiana's father, Marquis Jefferson, died two weeks after her funeral and her mother, Yolanda Carr, who also had congestive heart failure, died a few weeks later in January 2020.

Oh, this is so sad. Amber Carr was Zion's mother.

The settlement will be split into lump sums to cover living expenses, a college savings plan and scheduled payments to Zion up to age 40, Deputy City Attorney Laetitia Coleman Brown said. He will receive most of the money “later in life,” she said, at the request of his family.

“The city as well as his family were totally on board with each other in providing an amount that would take care of him through 18, making sure that he was able to go to college, make sure that he was incentivized to go to college, and making sure that he was taken care of for a longer period of time,” she said.

Yesterday I watched a documentary on YouTube about a Dallas skate park that feeds the neighbors. When I saw this post I recognized Zion as the boy in the documentary. I didn't realize he was Atatiana's nephew. The film is dedicated to his mother. I'm not sure if the link is allowed, but if you search "Dickies x 4DWN" on YouTube it's a free short film.
