“Will you be able to kill somebody if you have to," one member of the five-officer review panel asked Aaron Dean.

"No problem," Dean said, without hesitation.

NBC 5 Investigates obtained Dean's personnel file, including the 2017 recording of his applying to join the Fort Worth Police Department, that provided a glimpse into the life of the officer who, in the early morning hours of Oct. 12, shot and killed Atatiana Jefferson inside her home.

In his interview before the review panel — consisting of two officers, a detective, an investigator and a corporal — he said he wanted to be a cop because he was looking for adventure and wanted to help people.

"I am interested in working for this department because I want to serve my fellow citizens in a very close and personal way …," said Dean, dressed nicely in coat and tie.

He added: "I live in the city. I like the city a lot. I like the feel of the city."

NBC 5 Investigates has obtained exclusive video of the Fort Worth police officer who shot and killed a woman in her own home.
(Published Friday, Nov. 1, 2019)
In the interview, he admitted to one prior run-in with the law when he was in college.

"There was a young lady at the school flirting with me. I wanted to respond to see where it would go. It escalated a bit," Dean told the panel.

"I touched her inappropriately. It was an inappropriate action. And she, of course, took exception to it and rightfully so," he said.

Dean told the panel he pleaded no contest to a charge of simple assault, paid a fine, and learned from his mistake.

"What's changed since then is being careful about my actions and how they're perceived by others," he said.

Dean's training records note some concerns from supervisors in his first year on the job, including that he had "tunnel vision" and "needs improvement on communicating with the public and fellow officers."

But in his most recent job evaluation this spring, he received high marks from a supervisor who said, "You are a young officer working at a level commonly seen from more experienced officers. Keep up the good work!"

In his job interview, Dean said he was experienced with weapons, but would only use them to protect himself and others.

"I do have a license to carry …that, of course, is constantly on my mind…," he said.

"Being 32, and not being wet behind the ears anymore …I think brings maturity that you might not find in someone straight out of high school," he said.

Simple assault - red flag. Of course this guy is going to downplay the incident in his interview. IMO not only should he not be able to be a police officer, he should not be able to have a CHL.

I’m hoping for input here. I need some critical thinking assistance for effective discourse analysis. My brain is still in recovery. It’s tough to keep emotionality at a distance. I think sometimes - vantage points are all consuming. Discussions are therapeutic.

Yep, I caught that too. OH but wait, she was flirting with him. It wasn't his fault how he responded.

Breaking Sources say the father of #AtatianaJefferson has passed. Just a month ago I sat down him. He was heartbroken over his daughter’s death, saying she had much going for her and something good has to come out of this @CBSDFW

At least that will uncomplicate who gets the insurance from the City to some extent.

IMO He said exactly what he thought they wanted to hear, just like anyone would at a job interview. We are in an age of militarized police forces, Punisher as a symbol of backing the blue, first-person shooter games, and glorification of verbal and physical aggression. He assumed they would want aggression in a recruit, and that's what he specialized in, if that college incident is any indication. Most of the time sexual misbehavior is not reported, so I'm thinking the library incident was especially bad.

Sad to say, but this is probably true. Her Dad seemed like an honorable man. He spoke up about the Gofundme account saying that it wasn't necessary because he had the funds to pay for Tay's burial.

When I saw the family on a news conference basically badmouthing the father and stating that he had nothing to do with the fund and the family and that he had never been in Tay's life, I knew that something was off.

I'd sure like to know where all that gofundme money so generously donated from the public is being used.

God bless this man. May he rest in peace with his beloved daughter.

This police officer has been charged with murder, but he's not in jail right? And is he still collecting his pay? I hope his trial will be televised, the last trial I watched was the Travis Alexander trial. If he takes a plea will there still be a trial?

  • #898
No if he takes a plea no trial.

The whole point of taking a plea is to avoid a trial.

Atatiana Jefferson's father dies weeks after his daughter was killed by a police officer - CNN

Marquis Jefferson suffered a cardiac arrest and was taken to a hospital in Dallas on Friday night, family spokesman Bruce Carter said. His death comes less than a month after his daughter was fatally shot by a police officer in her home in Fort Worth, Texas. Atatiana Jefferson was his only child.
So terrible, not only is an innocent woman murdered in cold blood after BEING IN HER HOUSE her father dies right after that. The devastation this inflicted on her family is unthinkable. If we can't trust our police not to mindlessly kill us who can we trust?
