Expert witbess hiding said that even people with serious impulse control can control their impulses in certain circumstances.

He controlled his impulses into he didn't want to anymore.

And here we are

There is no mitigating what TH did.

I strongly agree with you. How on earth would there be any discoverable mitigating circumstance in this torture and murdering.

What does Tanner's mom's essay being published have to do with anything?
I don’t know how anything so far has anything to do with anything. This all seems to be about her so far.

I get that TH’s mom was evidently aware that he got a certain way sometimes - whatever that means - but my heart really does hurt for her. Mamas never want to believe their baby could do something so evil and denial is such a strong force. There’s no doubt that she’s hurting - both for her son and more than likely for Athena’s family too. She seems terribly old and beaten down, but she is only one year older than me.

Holy dysfunctional upbringing, Batman.
IMO.

ETA: I swear, I'm not making light of this woman's life and struggles, but it's a lot. It's still a lot, sounds like.

Looks like Tanner's attorney is falling asleep.

I don’t know the history here. I’m guessing a lot of history of trauma for her, probably him, probably generational and probably a lot of covering up and fixing.

I imagine the prosecution’s cross of her will be a challenge

Especially that last part.
But, he's already pled guilty. No insanity defense.
He's admitted to murdering a little girl in a horrific way.
Nothing can mitigate that.
A lot of people have terrible upbringings and don't do what he did.
IMO.

I still don't see how her trauma excuses his murdering of Athena

At this stage it's a pity party no one wanted an invitation to jmo

If TH stole a child because he wanted a friend and that child was located safe, playing checkers with TH, that would be mitigating.

There is NOTHING mitigating for stealing a child to act out all of his sexual frustrations on
torturing her before stomping her to death
Those were choices.

Wanh. Many people had dysfunctional parents and toxic childhoods. They don't all grow up to kidnap little girls and kill them.

People who grow up with trauma, often internalize their pain, to drug addiction. There are many stories about people who had harsh childhoods, and moved forward as excellent people who made significant contributions to society. Oprah Winfrey is one example.

Yes this all seems very drawn out and unnecessary.

While those who have witnessed violence, neglect and abuse in their upbringing may be predisposed to commiting violent acts themselves. It does not excuse Tanners choice to kill Athena that day .

I'm actually sick of perpetrators using the childhood trauma card to explain away why they committed an inhumane act

Everyone has their own inner battles but we don't go around killing people
