What's absolutely horrifying is that not a single soul could have protected her from that monster . He took her from the place she should have been most safe , her home .

I'm just sick for her parents living with that unimaginable grief . For the jurors who forever will be traumatised by his despicable acts 😫 💔

Athena learned the hard truth about child protection.

The only way to safeguard a child from a predator is for that predator to be removed from the equation before they meet the child.

That's it.

Athena had been educated about strangers. If she'd resisted any harder, he just would have been more violent in the initial abduction phase.

Do I think child protection is important? Absolutely. But it's absolutely no use against this kind of violent abduction by a stranger with a vehicle. This wasn't a person enticing her with candy, or looking for a lost dog, or pretending to be her friend. He saw her, forced her in the van, and that was it.

I can only imagine her despair and selfblame and inevitably deep feelings of betrayal when none of the things she was told to do and say worked to save herself.

No, we shouldn't make kids feel any less safe than they already do in the world, but there is absolutely nothing they could do in the face of a predator like this, and it feels cruel for those children who meet one that they die realising the uselessness of the stuff they were taught to feel safe.

Maybe martial arts should be taught as PE in elementary schools.

I mean he just brutally murdered a little girl and is driving back like its just another day.
We rarely get to see a murderer just after he murdered. Its chilling to see.
He has no remorse today and didn't then.

Are you a kidnapper?
Im going to tell my Daddy .
Why are you doing this?
NO! (to removing her clothes.)
Jingle bell Rock. (Through screams)

Its all to horrendous to think about.
Yet he sat there and had the nerve to even look at Athenas Mom at all!

That is interesting. Because mostly girls are taught to be polite. Instead, we should teach, run, kick, bite, anything to get away when a stranger picks you up. Scream. Pee, throw up, anything you can possibly do to make it harder.

One of the WFAA commentators noted that if he were truly remorseful, he would ask the defense to now rest too.

I don't have any problem with that at all.

Separated for 60 years.
No contact. No answers.
Until a cold case changed everything.

In 1971, a young woman was found barely alive in a quiet Maryland field with no ID, and no witnesses. Succumbing to her injuries, her case went cold.

For 54 years, her identity remained unknown, until advances in forensic DNA and a determined investigation finally uncovered the truth, revealing a family torn apart for decades and reunited two siblings who had not seen each other in 60 years.

In Episode 2 of Trace Identity, a new series from Othram Studios, we explore how DNA can transform uncertainty into identity and change lives in ways no one expects.

But the thing is, children are taught this, sometimes by their parents, sometimes by programs designed to combat child abduction.

I don't think such training would have made any difference in this case, except he would have been more violent in the initial phase.

He was massively bigger and stronger than her, and using extreme violence against her was a big part of his fantasy.

It's like advice to women on rape. Some rapists are enraged by resistance or excited by it, others offput by it. Some rapists are gentler with victims who try to be compliant, others, that compliance reminds them of women they're angry with and their victim will be treated much more violently.

There's no one way to behave, no education, no training, that can reduce harm in every situation. It's all about that individual predator and that individual victim at that time and place and situation, and everything that led to that moment. And if the end goal and most anticipated moment for the perpetrator is murder - as I believe it was for this predator - then there's nothing that's going to deter them.

We know Athena fought. There is no doubt she fought. His blood was under her tiny nails. Teaching seven year olds to fight when they're being murdered isn't going to change the outcome of this kind of predator taking a victim.

He's asking to be assigned the same truck "because it smells like vomit". Assures then he'd not sick, just nauseous.

I'm nauseous.

Don’t forget “I feel much better now.” 🤮

It's also a lie.

He wanted the same truck so that he could drive around all day in the crime scene and bask in the afterglow.

I have been strenuously avoiding this thread. It is simply too painful. As a mom and grandma I cannot look at that poor baby’s face standing terrified in that truck.

However, I just saw this in the DM where Athena asks him “are you a kidnapper?” and that caused jurors to cry.

How unbearably wrenching.

I guess I’ll try to read through the thread, I don’t know, but forgive me if this article has been posted 100 times already. I have sincerely not yet read any of this thread at all.

TH had moved from the fantasy part of predation to actual predation, and the first child that fitted his fantasy and was easy to snatch would be the one he took, this unfortunately was Athena, but it could have been any young girl on his Fed Ex route, I wonder if the system in his van had inventory of what was in the boxes or like the boxes at the two girls home it revealed what was inside on the box, and that it was presents for girls

this would have meant that he knew girls were likely living in the home he was delivering to and he would take the first girl that fitted his fantasy, and he could easily grab

I would shudder and be forever thankful if I had any small girls living anywhere in the area he delivered that it was not my child he took, as IMO he had spent years fantasying about what he would do if he snatched a young girl, his fantasies would have sustained him for a long time, then he would have moved into actually fantasizing about girls he had seen when he was out and about, then he would have moved to predation, and it was inevitable that once he had an interest sexually in young girls he would eventually act on it

I would be very interested in what characters he liked in anime, and what other hobbies he had to see if this was a part of what interested him,

We have not heard about his relationship history, but we have heard that he was sexually interested in teenage girls when he was an adult and has been charged with raping 2 girls, one of his rape victims did say he was interested in consent/non consent rape kinks (no kink shaming here, whatever does it for you and is consensual is fine by me,) but that interest and what we now know what he has done leads me to think his fantasies about control, and rape were their for a long time, before he took Athena,

I wonder what we will learn about him from the defense, I understand that he should have a vigorous defense considering the state wants to kill him, but they must know their is no coming back from what the jury saw and heard today

I am fascinated by human behavior, and I am very interested in hearing what testimony the defense will put on

I did hear that the defense and state are having hearings to decide which experts will testify, and what they will testify too, 18 defense witnesses was mentioned,

Sorry if my post did not have context. And I am not blaming Athena.

There was no way to get away.

But I know, I was always taught to be polite to older people. It isn't that way any longer.

I agree, it's a good thing to teach kids to yell, " Help! This isn't my daddy!" and pitch a fit if someone tries to lead them off from a supermarket, that's absolutely what that kind of training works for - a public, crowded environment where an abductor is trying to be covert and lead or carry a quiet child away without attracting attention.

But in the end, when a predator gets a child alone and under their control, politeness or resistance doesn't matter, because they have all of the power and can physically dominate a child whatever their degree of resistance.

A punch or two to the face can stun a grown adult, a child can be completely incapacitated by it. And being taught to yell and bite at that moment isn't helpful.

In the grocery store, yes. Yell, bite, announce loudly that you don't know the attacker, that they're hurting you.

But Athena wasn't in a public place, surrounded by potential rescuers. She was in her own driveway, alone, when a monster snatched her before she even knew what was happening. And by then, it was all over, even though it had only begun.

As I said, child protection is important, but equally, it is utterly useless to apply it to situations and predators like we see in this case. It's like a terrible bolt of lightning from a clear sky. All the small and large circumstances in both their lives leading to that moment. If anything had changed, she might have been fine, still alive. But another little girl probably wouldn't be. He was always going to take a child. It was just chance that everything converged and it was Athena.

I am amazed that this monster did not just ask for the death penalty rather than having the penalty phase continue.

The video after he tortured and murdered Athena shows exactly how easily he lies (not great lies) and believes that he can get away with anything. He didn't kneel when cleaning. He carefully put her clothes in his pack. He talks to his fiancee and has no affect.

Once again, the jury is left to marinate in the horror they heard today--- waiting for 5 days before the next testimony will occur. They will all need serious counseling to deal with the horror they have witnessed. Peace to them.

This man is devoid of humanity. The unfortunate truth here is that we rarely get a glimpse into the horror of these kinds of killings. More chilling than we could ever imagine. Peace to Athena and her family.

It is the only thing we have if a predator larger than us attacks, our voice, Athena was taught stranger danger, and she obviously listened, and she did use her voice, it wasn't enough to save her, but she did all she could

never be meek is my motto, we must teach all girls that if a man approaches you anywhere and he makes you uncomfortable then make a scene, do not be concerned about being embarrassed, it is his shame not yours if he is bothering you, I am 5ft nothing but I have the mouth of a giantess, and I will happily and loudly tell men to F off if they are bothering me, we had this dirty creepy man in our town who would walk up to women and teenage girls and whisper filthy sexual comments at them, he did it to me only once, as I screamed you filthy f*cker at him, and proceeded to follow him till he ran away inviting everybody in the vicinity to take a good look and if you see him call him a dirty old man, and tell him to F off,

for too long we have been silenced to our disadvantage, our first response to any man that makes our Spidey senses tingle is to ;loudly let him know you picked the wrong person to mess with,

Athena did everything right, she used her voice, she fought him, he was much bigger and stronger than her, but she was as fierce and feral and wild as she could be, and it was only going to end one way that day because TH made that choice, but she didn't give up she fought with every ounce of her 7 year old body and mind, and we should teach all girls to be like Athena because not all predators are the same, and some predators get scared off by screaming and fighting and kicking

Oh my god. I cannot imagine having to listen. My head and heart has been heavy all day just from the words we heard she said and that little picture. I've followed so many cases with you all but this one has just broke me over and over.
