oops I got my doe's confused. I didn't mean Massachusetts, but rather someone else who fits all the exact details (height, weight, eye colour, hair colour,) he even looks identical to the composite sketch! He also had previously slashed wrists. Last seen in 1992.

I believe he might be the fugitive Raymond Abbott who has been wanted by US Marshalls since 1992. On July 3, 1992, Abbott escaped from the maximum security prison in Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico. He is a caucasian male, would have been 37 in 1998 at the time of John Doe's suicide, had dark hair and dark eyes, was 160 pounds, and also had slash marks on both of his wrists.

He also bears a striking resemblance to the composite sketch of the John Doe.

Good question. I can't tell if they have confirmed an identification and just not announced it or are still trying to unequivocally confirm it?

I agree I thought so too. But seeing as we never heard back and never got an identification, I thought maybe to look and see if there was anyone else that could fit the description and I found Mr. Abbott.

DNA Doe project has confirmed it will be looked into. Haven’t heard back from Austin Cold Case Department but as long as someone is aware of the possibility that’s a win in my eyes!

Yes, I agree, it can be him! This John Doe namus profile is still active, if he was reported missing, the missing persons profile must be active too. Hopefully, there are news soon!
