YOAKUM - Although the last sexual assault of an elderly woman took place here about five months ago, women in Yoakum aren't resting easy.

"Every lady is still wondering where he can be," said Ann Seidenberger, a member of Xi Chi Theta Sorority that held a community meeting with law enforcement officials last March following the second attack. "We're all still being careful and looking over our shoulder."

Seidenberger said she knows of some women who took gun safety courses following the assaults, and she personally purchased pepper spray as did many others.

The last reported sexual assault of an elderly woman in Yoakum came in November.

Mela Walker, who helped organize the community meeting attended by about 225, lives on a ranch about 10 miles from town. Walker is in Yoakum often and attends meetings there regularly.

"Life is not what we used to call normal in Yoakum," Walker said. "No one is letting their guard down. I think this will continue until we hear that the rapist has been caught. No one has resumed their comfortable lifestyle."

In December, Texas Gov. Rick Perry formed a task force headed by the Texas Rangers to investigate the attacks in Yoakum and as many as 12 related rapes, attempted rapes or burglaries in Leon, Bell and Falls counties. DNA evidence linked some of the cases.

In early March, an 80-year-old Moody woman was sexually assaulted in her home during the early morning hours. Moody is 14 miles north of Temple.

Tom Vinger, Department of Public Safety spokesman, said that attack is thought to be by the same man.

Whoah!! Hidden in the middle of a public interest story is the bombshell. Thought to be the same man. WTH?? It took 6 weeks to get this info out to the people of Texas? Did they outsource the DNA match to Nairobi? Lord, help me. Where is concernd? Poor thing. She must be reeling. This is really really frightening. So, he's not locked up. He's laughing at us and he's going to keep up his vile terror until someone is terribly hurt.

Thank you for posting Ruflossn!!

I thought the same thing. WTH? "Thought to be the same man"? Do they even have a DNA match? Did I miss something? I read this article about 3x before I realized exactly what it was saying. Unbelievable. I thought about contacting the author of the article / Sonny Long and thanking him for writing the article.

From the link above:

"Glenn Owen, a professional profiler and law enforcement officer in East Texas, contacted the Advocate after reading about the attacks."We profile killers and rapists in three different categories - organized offender, disorganized offender and a mix between organized and disorganized," Owen wrote in an e-mail. "In my opinion this serial rapist is organized." [ETA: WSers already knew that!!]

"I would say the offender comes from a home that is not broken (parents not divorced), but dysfunctional with a very dominant father figure who may have verbally and mentally abused his wife and children," Owen added.

Above average in intelligence.

More than likely graduated from high school and could have taken college courses.

Could work as a skilled laborer.

Likely married with children.

More than likely he has a criminal history of theft, burglary or criminal trespass.

Voyeurism is also likely one of his abnormal behaviors. He could be a peeping Tom.

Owen also wrote that he thought the attack in Moody was the work of the same man.

Vinger said the Texas Rangers had no comment on the accuracy of Owen's profile."

Is this not the very first helpful and useable info we've received in 15 months of attacks? And it wasn't even generated by the Task Force. It was offered by a professional profiler--not requested--not ordered. I don't get it. Can someone call Mrs. Bush and see if she can put in a good word for some extra manpower? What is it going to take?

And there is NOTHING else in the news. Why isn't this on the front page of the Austin American-Statesman? Grrrrrrrrr.

You know, settling down and breathing calmly for a minute, I seem to remember the news about discounting the Lubbock rapist being really slow. The results came back in 16 days but there were no waving flags or clanging bells. One had to really dig for info. IIRC, it took a week to ten days to get an actual "hard" report that the rape was not connected.

I just thought of something we need to check. I thought the attack in Moody of concernd's relative was in late February. Am I wrong, is the reporting off or was there another attack. Let me check some dates.

I think it was early March. The 1st, 2nd, or 3rd?

I brought over the profile that my friend completed earlier in the year. It is posted originally on post #92. Interesting the similarities.

Original Posting -

Here is profile that my friend completed on this creep. It is difficult to get a completely accurate profile w/out all the crime info. But, it is interesting.

In my opinion this serial rapist is organized.

-Organized offenders are average to above average in intelligence.

-Come from families where they may have been mentally not physically abused.

-Dominate father figure.

-More than likely graduated from high school and could have taken college courses.

-Many organized offenders work as skilled laborers.

-Many are married and have children.

-More than likely he has a criminal history of theft, burglary or criminal trespass (Peeping Tom).

-Voyeurism is often one of their abnormal behaviors.

-I would say our offender comes from a home that is not broken (parents not divorced) but dysfunctional with a very dominant father figure who may verbally and mentally abused his wife and children.

It was reported on March 1st but I seem to remember that it happened the night before. Maybe it's splitting hairs as the woman we know of is 80. I hope there's not another.

I think IWannaKnow pointed out these comments following this article (forgive me if it was someone else) but I just came across them again and think we need to keep it in mind:

http://www.kwtx.com/lorena/headlines/85826312.html?storySection=comments#commentSection

"Another that comes to mind, meat sellers. Knocked on my door yesterday in a truck wanting to sell meat. They cover a large area...." Posted March 2nd by "LockedandLoaded"

and

"I had a weird experience with a direct tv guy last year he installed my system in belton but was out of the waco area they service all of these small towns. someone should look into that because i had to report him to direct tv for coming 2 my house several times 4 no reason & he followed me 1 night also around the same time my porch light was disabled several times. I had an alarm system installed after that & started having my sister stay over with me at night and i never had another problem. a few weeks later the lady across the street from me was attacked & raped in her home & they have never caught the guy that did it. i think a direct tv guy could be who they need to look for they know where the phone lines & stuff are at they know the layouts of the houses in the area too. they also service many small towns in one region..." Post #285, concernd said: The attack happened in the evening Sunday night the 28th.

So, why does the reporter say that it was early March? Could it be another?

I am going to be really ticked if this is sloppy journalism. The date is wrong. The most important fact is hidden in the middle of a "filler" sort of article. Has anyone checked the Task Force HQ lately? Is anybody there?

Hi MissIzzy ~
I do not think this is sloppy journalism.
If the attack did occur on Feb. 28th, that is only one day before March 1st. The journalist was not out of line in stating the attack occurred around the
1st of the month. imo.

I'm a stickler for details, Ruflossn, I admit it. I realize that it doesn't make that much difference but it still bothers me. The reporter just glosses over the details. As a reader (trying to step away from being a WSer for a moment), I'd want to know a lot more about who made the connection, what made the connection, and whether there have been any more reports. We get a sentence!!

I just checked and I still see nothing other than that single article. I'm going to write to the reporter right now.

I agree with your thoughts on wanting to know more. However, the reporter was probably given only limited information. I would imagine he reported all the info that was made available to him. I am anxious to see how he responds to your queries

I just wrote to Mr. Long and thanked him for the article. I asked him if he realized that his article is the first and only to link the rapist to Moody. I also asked for clarification for dates and if he had heard why the confirmation had taken so long. I noticed a sidebar that I hadn't seen last night. If you click on it, you bring up "The Story So Far" and this last entry:

"March 2 - An 80-year-old woman in Moody is attacked in the early morning hours. The attack is believed to be done by the same man."

The incorrect listing of the date still bothers me. There could be a good reason for it but I'm waiting for clarification. Maybe LE listed it as March 2nd but it was in the morning news on March 1st. That strikes me as very odd.

I'll post as soon as I hear back.

Extra points for a quick response!! Mr. Long's response. I told him that I would be reporting his response to our thread.

"Thanks for the note and I appreciate your concerns.
I got the date from published accounts of the attack in Moody that said March 2. I would hope there was only one, so it is likely the same one you said happened on Feb. 28.

In those articles I read, the Temple paper and the Waco paper, the Task Force spokesman would not confirm a link. Remember my article was more than a month later, so when I asked the question by that time I think they had decided there was a connection. I was not told if there was a DNA link or just a pattern/method match.
It's likely the other papers simply have not done a follow up.

As far as the profile...it was offered by someone I know from East Texas and I shared it with the Texas Rangers. While they would not confirm its accuracy, I got the feeling they were interested in it and asked for the profiler's contact information.

I do not think they are dragging their feet...just my opinion. This man is simply hard to catch and it's quite likely that publicity -- although that's the best way to keep the public informed -- is also making him more cautious."

Mr. Long seems very open to answering questions if anyone else would like to write to him:

Back in December, the news sources were reporting that there is a $5000 reward. I haven't seen anything more recent. If there is someone acting strangely, LE really needs to be called immediately--reward or not.

My guess is that nobody's going to notice the serial rapist acting strangely. That's the problem. He hides in plain sight. Someone acting out attracts attention.

What exactly did your friend see? Are you talking about Ennis, the little town south of Dallas?

I agree, Missizzy.

I was researching info about a reward and came across an article that I do not remember reading. I am going to do the usual and post the link as well as highlight the points that were new to me.

http://www.click2houston.com/news/22408386/detail.html

Central Texas has not been this man's sole hunting ground. The twilight rapist's trail began in January of last year in the town of Yoakum, about two hours west of Houston. A 91-year-old woman living in a retirement community was attacked twice. When the rapist came back for a third attempt, the woman had moved.

HE CAME BACK FOR A 3rd TIME?
Did anyone else know this?
And, how would LE know he returned for a 3rd time?
Was someone else living in her home? Did this person provide any new info?

Police also said this predator cuts the phones lines before each attack and gathers cell phones before he leaves so his victims can't immediately call police. Detectives said he also takes something from each of his victims.

This is the first I have heard of him gathering cell phones.........
