Hm. Maybe it's different in west vs east Texas? I'm in east Texas and I never hear anyone say 'highway patrol' it's usually just "A trooper" or "The troopers". The term could also be different because some people will try to speak more 'accurately' on a 911/police call verses what they would normally say to a friend. Not intentionally just your brain saying to be more formal. Just a thought.
True. I'm originally from East Texas. But out West it's rarely said that way, and it's been years since I've been back home. You have a point, though.
