Breanna Wood was last seen with Tejeda at a PMI market at the intersection of Tancahua Street and Hancock Avenue.

An inmate told police Tejeda said he shot Wood in the back of the head at his apartment across from the PMI. Then Tejeda broke Wood's arms and raped her corpse.

Earlier this week Tejeda appeared before a magistrate judge in the Nueces County Jail and asked for a court-appointed attorney. After the brief hearing, he blew kisses to an older woman in the gallery and flashed his middle fingers to the media.

His bail is set at more than a $1 million and includes an unrelated charge of burglary of a habitation.

Police found Wood's body on Jan. 3 after an inmate reported he was paid to dispose of her remains. The inmate directed police to an abandoned oil field trailer surrounded by brush off State Highway 666 near Robstown. Her body was found inside a box measuring smaller than 2-feet-by-2-feet and covered with a white sheet.

Another inmate later reached out to police and said Tejeda, with whom he shared a cell, confessed to killing Wood. The inmate told police Tejeda said he shot Wood in the back of the head at his apartment across from the PMI, according to an arrest affidavit. Then Tejeda broke Wood's arms and raped her corpse, the inmate told police. Tejeda told the inmate Wood's body would never be found. When the inmate heard police found her, he wanted to tell police what Tejeda said. According to a police report, the medical examiner confirmed Wood's wounds were consistent with the inmate's story.

Murder suspect will go trial later this year

In a hearing Thursday, 105th District Judge Jack Pulcher granted three motions filed by Joseph Tejeda's defense attorneys, including one which will give them information on any plea deals struck for information in the case.

Defense attorneys and prosecutors agreed to go to trial in late October or early November.

In a hearing Thursday before 105th District Judge Jack Pulcher, Joseph Tejeda was given a Jan. 22, 2018 trial date. A docket call was set for Jan. 18.

In addition to new charges for Tejeda, who now faces capital murder, a grand jury indicted six others for crimes related to Wood’s death.

Sandra Vasquez, 42, was charged with capital murder, engaging in organized criminal activity and aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon.

Christopher John Gonzalez, 28, who is wanted, was charged with capital murder and engaging in organized criminal activity.

Gregorio Rolando Cruz, 37, Magdalena Yvette Carvajal, 33, and Tejeda's mother Rosalinda Musella, 47, were charged with tampering with physical evidence. Carvajal and Musella are both wanted.

Theodore Allen, AKA Ted Allen, 65, was charged with aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon.
