CRYSTAL BEACH, Texas — Three years have passed since Bridgette Gearen was raped, strangled and beaten to death in Crystal Beach, but the case isn’t cold, investigators said.

Solving the case could hinge on evidence investigators collected 10 months ago but just now is undergoing testing in the Texas Department of Public Safety crime lab. Galveston County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Tommy Hansen declined to say what kind of evidence was gathered, but he expressed hope the tests could turn up new answers to the questions about Gearen’s death

Hopefully this will be solved soon. Crystal Beach is my favorite place to go. Every spring break my kids and I rent a beach house. I absolutely love it there.

Hansen believes more than one person is responsible for the murder and a number of issues have hampered the case. The location is one problem.

“Our area has a lot of transient people and by that I don’t mean street people,” he said. “So many people come in and out of Galveston County and Galveston is a key tourist area. We have heavy industry, 70 miles of beach front, a seafood industry, the University of Texas Medical Branch, it’s the playground of the nation”...

Then comes a second problem – Hurricane Ike... “Virtually everyone who lived out there is gone,” he said. “I can’t tell you how many dozens and dozens of people I’ve traveled to interview. Ninety-five percent of the structures are gone and we’re behind the eight ball but that hasn’t changed a lot but caused delay.”

'GALVESTON COUNTY, Texas — Cold case investigators in Galveston County say they’re getting closer to bringing justice to the family of a woman who was murdered on Crystal Beach 17 years ago.
Bridgette Gearen was on vacation in 2007 when her body was found in the water. She had been raped and strangled. Bridgette had brought along her 2-year-old daughter, Krya, to the vacation at the beach with her co-workers. Kyra’s dad, Bridgette’s fiancé, Brandon Portie had stayed home.'

''Investigators will only say they’re close to finally solving the case. They said new evidence obtained in the past year could finally help to bring this mystery to an end. They won’t share what that evidence is, and they say no arrests have been made, no charges have been filed and a grand jury has not been presented the case yet.''

“This case has remained extremely active for all these years,” Galveston County Lt. Tommy Hansen said. “We had two interviews last week, and we are working on providing additional evidence to the district attorney. There have been 192 interviews, and it is now a 1,000-page report, and we are working with confidence to submit evidence that will withstand the appellant report.”

Similar updates were reported in 2011 and 2013 when reports surfaced of a person of interest and new evidence, but justice for Gearen and her family has yet to surface.

“I do not want to upset the family, but we are actively working on this case” Hansen added. “While this is a horrible case, it has never been a cold case.”
