TX TX - Cheryl Henry, 22, & Andy Atkinson, 21, Houston, 21 Aug 1990

"She said they wont do that until all leads have been exhausted. What???? It's been 28 years!"

Sounds like BS to me. What could they have possibly left uninvestigated over the last 28 years that would stop them from pursuing a line of inquiry that has probably greater than a 90% chance of success of finding the killer?

100% Agree! It's very frustrating..........

I'd be making noise about this in the press. If this DNA profile is loaded into GEDMATCH it would be solved likely in a matter of weeks or months

it has been in CODIS but I am not familar with GEDMATCH. How do we do that?

Morf 13. I agree. Since April this year, Parabon has partnered with GEDMatch. Once Parabon processes the DNA, they use GEDMatch to further narrow it down. Don't quote me, but I believe the total cost is under $5,000.

Good post but I would look at any possible connections to other double murders in the US such as the Colonial Parkway Murders. I assume any connections to the Golden State Killer have been ruled out since Paul Holes identified him as that Italian man. I always thought he was more Germanic like myself. As I say good luck with finding the military style man who committed this crime.

Parabon is what we are getting a push back on from the HPD. We have asked, sent the detective numerous emails with examples of cases solved, offered to pay, etc. I contacted Parabon directly and yes you are correct the costs is under $5k. Extremely frustrating.

If my memory serves me right, I remember that Detective stating she was going to use the latest and greatest methods to help solve this case. That being Familial DNA testing.
I noticed you mentioned "CODIS," which only searches the state data base unless it is used in conjunction with "NIDIS."
I see how frustrating this can be, and as I have said before, it's time to make noise. You still have options.
This would be my next step.
Contact Us | Office of the Attorney General
I'd contact them and see if they can get the ball rolling first.
If you have no satisfaction there, then I'd draft a petition, keeping it concise, as I previously mentioned. You have many people here pulling for you, and imo you'd get enough signatures here alone to get peoples attention.
I speak from experience when I say the last thing an Attorney General wants is negative attention from a major newspaper that's about to go public with bad publicity. They are elected officials, and will stop at nothing to sway votes in their favor.
Never give up!

Online petition maybe? Let me know if you make one, I'll share it on the MP/UP FB page I coown. We have about 40,000 followers so have an awesome post reach! People love to sign for cases like your sister.

I brought up using familial DNA here after the Claremont serial killer was caught. More examples: EAR, the Grim Sleeper, Jason Ward, Paul Hutchinson, etc. There are many.

What a crock! So the detective is saying they have leads they are still following up on from 28 years ago?? Whoa, slow down detective. Give it another 25 years, just to be sure. There may be a tip someone left on an 8 track tape that has yet to be discovered.

I’m sorry Mocity but this infuriates me, so I can’t even begin to imagine how you and your family must feel. Y’all are trying so hard and doing all the right things, yet are only running into brick walls.

Hopefully they are currently working on things behind the scenes that they don’t want to discuss with the family yet.

  • #552
There are things that LE agencies are not obligated to share with the family. However, there are also things that, by law, they must share with victims, and in this case, MoCity, her parents, and her brothers and sisters are "victims."
Below I'll post a list of things they must share, in the state of Tx. if requested.
There's a lot of good information throughout, but, if you want to get to the specific information that addresses DNA testing, scroll down to 56.021.

Mocity, you may want to skip my post, I don’t want to trigger you. I just want to remind those who may be new to the thread how awful it really was, and spur them into reading the entire thread. Anything may help. I’m sorry.

Cheryl and Andy’s murders were committed after the murderer committed at least one other rape in the area. He also knew personal things about the girl he raped.

Using escalating violence, the murder of Andy and the rape and murder of Cheryl were truly heinous and brutal, with bizarre staging involved. There is no way that this freak hasn’t committed other crimes, but he is aware that his DNA is on file, so he must always be careful.

This is why Houston detectives must run familial DNA on this monster.

He has moved to another state or/and is chilling out like EAR did, perhaps in your neighborhood. This chills me.

Strip clubs...

Any similar crimes in Dallas or San Antonio?

If they are running the new dna testing on this case, I doubt they would broadcast it out or tell anybody. They would not want to tip anyone off. The cases they have used on, LE has been very secretive with the process.

Maybe somebody impersonating a police office.

He wasn’t impersonating an officer when he raped the girl who lived, but it’s possible. He was wearing a stocking over his face, dark clothing and gloves, and had a long barreled shot gun, correct me if I’m wrong Mocity.

He was wearing what he told her was a military uniform, which also could have been a security officer type uniform.

I hope you’re correct, and I am usually very pro LE, but Houston Police Dept. is notoriously understaffed and overworked.

It took them I believe 17 years to run the DNA from the rape victim that connected that rape with Andy and Cheryl’s murderer. Who knows how many DNA samples are out there that haven’t been run yet that may match? Problems with DNA and backlog have been long running in Houston ( I’m sorry I can’t post links from my phone but it can be easily googled).
