my first thought was - I thought he was cancelled years ago

I have no idea whether this particular case has merit, however Chris Brown has been in a never-ending series of assaults. He is a violent man. And he has power and money which makes him even more dangerous.
It's possible that some people are taking advantage of his 'reputation' but then they might be telling the truth. Let's wait until we see how this plays out in court.
