Well, if it were the ex, I'm thinking the children were out of school that day. He would have had to leave them home alone twice possibly. He would have had to have left them, dropped his car close to Super 8, sometime that morning, waited for her (contemplating the school would be closed), waited for her, did whatever to her, put her in the car, drive to put her someplace, park her car in the lot and find a ride back home. That sounds like a lot in a short amount of time. If my kids don't have school, they wake up approximately their regular school time. That would be risky to leave the kids alone in the morning for sure. One of them could have gotten frightened and went to a neighbors seeking help. (Possibly). Also that they lived in a condo. Not sure how the condos are built, but possibly connecting at least one wall.
I also thinking, the briefcase could have been left at the condo the evening before. She may have swapped out the briefcase for an overnight bag. I'm sure the kids would noticed something out of the ordinary.
The vacation thing is off to me as well. If they still shared custody, or he had physical custody, most times there would need to be a letter granting permission to take the kids out of the country. She would need to have told him or... he could claim kidnapping or reported her a that would/ could mess up her custody. Most times the other consents to the child(ren) vacationing. And why would you wait until the kids were in school for two weeks, to take them out of the country??
