To The Texas Board of REGISTERED NURSES

The autopsy showed that 4 year old Emma Catherine Grace Thompson on June 27th 2009, had "80 contusions, a severe head laceration, a scalp hemorrhaging, skull fracture, internal bleeding from her ruptured pancreas, broken ribs, a severe tear and hemorrhaging to the vagina - laceration at her hymen, which was not intact."

Emma's pediatrician alerted CPS in early June after diagnosing the 4 year old with Herpes Virus 2 - on her hands, in her throat and in her vagina. The ER doctor, not seeing any sign of sexual abuse at the time of the exam, (other than the oral and vaginal herpes), Abigail Young's claim she had no man in the home and Emma shaking her head 'no' when asked if she had been touched inappropriately - allowed Abigail Young to return home with her daughter. Three weeks later, June 27, 2009 - Emma Thompson age 4 years, 2 months and 28 days - was brought to the community ER, where she was pronounced dead.

Benjamin Thompson, Emma's father - testified that his wife told him that the type of herpes their daughter, Emma (age 4) contracted had started out as a “childhood” version and had somehow developed into the sexual disease adults contract.

Abigail Young was also diagnosed with herpes during this time - claiming she had no idea where the SDI came from, but “She may have gotten it from Emma. Emma by the way was 4 years old.

Abigail Young made sure CPS knew she was following through on her daughter's case of herpes and the bruises, Emma's father had reported to CPS in early June (just two months after they separated) - taking her to an infectious disease specialist and even having her tested for leukemia - but oddly she failed to tell these medical professionals about her boyfriend, Lucas Coe that neighbors testified had spent a lot of time at the Young -Thompson house. A boyfriend who had just ended his parole in March.

Before taking her seriously ill 4 year old, to the ER, Abigail Young applied super glue to Emma's head laceration, she made dinner for the family, she cleaned the bathroom with bleach and drove one block from home before calling 911 from the car - she then sat in the back of an ambulance talking on her cell phone, while her baby was brought into the ER.

Homicide division Lt. Rolf Nelson said the child had bruises and cuts on her body. He said investigators did not receive adequate explanations (from Abigail Young or Lucas Coe) for how the girl had been injured. “Either there were no explanations offered, or the explanations offered for the cause of the injuries were not plausible,” Nelson said.

In total, Abigail Young told friends, family, neighbors, doctors, the police and CPS that Emma was bruised from walking into tables, scraped her vagina on the pool, had bite marks caused by her boyfriends "kinky" four year old daughter, got herpes from a toilet seat at the local YMCA, fell in the bathroom and or fell out of bed, injuring herself. The bruises on her body, the fractured ribs and internal bleeding were caused by CPR and the bruises on her thighs happened when Young pulled an unconscious Emma out of the car.

On July 12, 2010 Abigail Young, was found guilty of "Injury to a Child, By Omission". A first degree felony - sentenced to 20 years.

While the state has charged and found Abigail Young guilty of but one offense, I pray the Texas Board of Nurses can use the incidences of blatant lies and attempts to mislead investigators to remove the privilege of having a Nursing License and practicing as a medical professional for life.

Very sincerely yours,

Thanks LCM!~ Wonder what it takes to have a license revoked? Geez!

It takes ALOT *and* you'd be surprised who manages to get reinstated!!:furious:

I will write the medical board as well, just to make sure she gets revoked. She was convicted of a felony....

  • #585
Even if they never revoke her license, she can't have the felony removed from her record, right? Any potential future health care employers would certainly run a background check, I'm hoping. And, once they discover the felony, I pray they wouldn't hire her.

  • #586
Yes, she will always be a felon - in reading the disciplinary actions - most of them are temporary and/or rely on multiple infractions. Of course most of the infractions don't address a nurse causing the death of their own child, by allowing her to be violated and abused -

I can't stand seeing her addressed as a "mother" or as a "nurse". Like motherhood; "nursing" defines who you are - you can't take it off by putting your cap in a box or dropping your uniform in the laundry. I don't know any other way to explain it, but it is why I know IAY knew her baby girl was being abused in the worst way.

Some women who are not cut out for motherhood, may overlook the obvious (we see this everyday on this website) but the only way this "gifted nurse" could "over-look" the obvious was thru deception. She was not taking Emma to doctors to get to the bottom of her troubles - she was looking for someone who would back up her own fabrications.

She makes me sick.

ETA - Anyone else who feels the need to send a "complaint" to the state nurses licensing board - they will ask for identifying information such as your name and an address or email address, but the information you provide is confidential and will not be shared with IAY or her representative, regardless of the outcome of the investigation.

This has been a "safe hold" in an attempt to allow nurses to safely make a formal complaint against a coworker, patients (or their family) to make a complaint about health care - without fear of retribution.

Thank you all for caring about little Emma and the other victims for whom we have had the honor of trying to seek justice achieved - when their families, CPS, the legal system or just plain common sense failed them.

I saw a news article the other day regarding the call to 911 - according to their records it was placed minutes before 9pm! WTH is going on with the DA's office?

LCoastMom - Thanks so much for keeping us up-to-date with this case. It has disturbed me more than words can say. I am patiently waiting for Coe to go to trial, but the whole way the case has been handled by the prosecutors is giving me huge doubts as to whether it will be tried properly. I hope I am wrong and they come out with both barrels blazing.

I share your fears! I thought Young was going to be going down hard.... Maybe her getting away with murder will give them a wake up call. This case so horrified me, I couldn't follow it. Now I can't stop.

Nursing license revoked

Young has a job in a local plant nursery.

https://www.bon.state.tx.us/olv/nurserslt.asp

She was fired from her job at the Brenham hospital, the day she was arrested last August. But her license is current - Until 8/31/11 IIRC - but don't take my word for it, feel free to check with the Nurses Licensing Board in TX. The address and phone number are in the above link.

Yes. You are correct on their website (the day I checked and again today)

Current Disciplinary Action: FORMAL CHARGES - 8/12/2009 (No documents were located)

She most certainly has not lost her license or even been disciplined. Further in it reads that it may take 8 to 12 months to see results, by my calculation it will be 12 mos on 8/12/10. They should have at least restricted her license while she was out on bond - the lies were revealed back in Aug 09. The FACT that the article said she was working for a plant nursery says she couldn't get work in nursing even if only because no one would hire her.

BTW the Banner said she was not working in patient care at Trinity Medical Center, but someone who claimed to be a nurse there said she was again working in OB and the NSY, after orientation.

Trinity claimed she was working in sterile supply. Most nurses at small hospitals are responsible for "sterile" supplies in OB - because everything used in a delivery is washed and sterilized. Then the supplies must be set up for a delivery by the nurse. I cannot imagine the horror of going in to have a baby and seeing her face in L&D or the NSY.

Not because she was going to be spreading her herpes to anyone. (like multiple posters feared in the comments of all the articles) - but because she allowed her baby to be murdered. Innocent until proven guilty is only in the courts - if you committed the crime - you are not innocent - before, during or after trial.

How are nurses disciplined by the Board? (From the link)
Cases in which the evidence indicates that a sanction against the nurse is needed in order to protect the public will result in an Order of the Board and will include both the sanction and any requirements placed on the nurse for retention of their license. Possible sanctions include remedial education, fine, warning, reprimand, suspension, probation and revocation. Board Orders are public information and are permanent designations in the licensure records of the nurse.

  • #595
So, does that mean they are in the process of revoking it? I surely hope so.

  • #596
On 8/16/2010 Abigail Young completed a voluntary surrender of her Texas nursing license.

I hope that means she can never re-apply for another nursing license.

  • #597
Welcome to WS, mnm!!! I hope you are correct and she cannot get another one. TX is pretty tough once the license has been pulled...the question will be any other state she might move to.

  • #598

Yeah, 9pm - AFTER shopping for groceries and making dinner for that-we-cannot-name, knowing full well little Emma had fallen earlier in the day and was not well. Maybe she missed her calling as a nurse and should have applied to be Kevorkian's assistant....:furious:
